Gender mainstreaming implies that a gender perspective will be integrated in every activity undertaken and will inform decision-making processes at both policy and operational level. It is also important to clarify that gender mainstreaming is not a goal in itself; it is a way of working towards the goal of gender equality.

Ten principles can be followed to produce the sort of equal post-conflict settlement planning that can help to build communities that have a better basis of becoming peaceful and sustainable.

This report presents an overview of the state of planning in Africa. It is the result of research carried out by the African Planners Association among 15 of its affiliate member countries. The research, carried out in 2012, provides a perspective of the roles of urban and regional planners within the process of settlement formation, urbanization and rural development.
