Annual report 2022

The global economic crisis and COVID-19 have exacerbated inequality and stalled sustainable economic development. Conflict, food insecurity, the climate crisis and other emergencies forced more than 100 million people to leave their homes in 2022. The world is not on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Crises are increasingly affecting urban populations, and cities and urban areas are all the more relevant to address them. In 2022, UN-Habitat consolidated the implementation of its Strategic Plan 2020-2023 and advocated for recognition of the critical role of cities and local communities in sustainable development and multilateral processes. UN-Habitat’s work has achieved impact at scale, provided thought-leadership and sparked urban innovations, contributing to making cities and communities sustainable, inclusive, resilient and safe.
