UN-Habitat implemented the “Project for Improving Living Environment and Disaster Prevention Capacity in Cambodia” with grant aid from the Government of Japan (2019-2020) to support the recovery process of the 2018 floods and strengthen climate resilience of the disaster-affected population. Climate Change is big news all over the world. Ironically, water usually finds mention in the footnotes even though it is arguably the principal adverse fall-out of changing climate patterns and extreme weather events.
Since 2008, more than half of the world’s population already lived in cities. This figure continues to grow, particularly in Africa and Asia, and coastal urban centres receive a disproportionate share of this growth.

Mainstreaming climate change considerations in the planning process is crucial, especially considering that Myanmar ranks second in list of most affected countries by climate extreme events between 1996-2015 (Global Climate Risk Index 2017). Adaptation to climate-related hazards will require Town planning that involves governmental institutions, academia, private sector as well as a high level of community participation.

The overall aim of the training course is to build the capacity of national and local governments for integrating CCA and DRR measures into local development plans. The course modules are tailored to equip government officials with robust knowledge on climate change and its impacts in Myanmar, as well as with analytical and technical skills on how to develop local CCA and DRR strategies and plans based upon vulnerability assessments.
