This Analysis Report uses the Index of Multiple Deprivations as an effective diagnostic tool for measuring relative deprivation and inequalities in small areas, such as secondary cities and towns. The analysis shows that by 2050, 6 out 10 people in Africa will live in urban areas and 70 per cent of them will be children and youth.

The framework will guide member States in the region in adapting their plans to the existing context at the subregional, national and subnational levels. It encourages coherence and harmonized implementation of human settlement commitments along the urban-rural continuum, in alignment with African priorities and multiple global commitments.

The Urban-LEDS project Phase II (“Accelerating climate action through the promotion of urban low emission development strategies” 2017-2021) aims to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and enhancing climate change resilience by the promotion of Urban Low Emissions Development Strategies (Urban LEDS) and climate action plans (CAPs) in cities/towns in emerging economies and Least Developed Countries (LDC).

This is a final evaluation report of the “Making Cities Sustainable and Resilient” project, which was jointly implemented by UN-Habitat and UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in the period of 2016-2020. In cities and urban areas in East Africa, livelihoods and incomes of populations are seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for those living in informal settlements. These urban populations are more vulnerable to food insecurity and unstable livelihoods as they mainly depend on the informal sector. It is estimated that the number of food insecure people in East Africa will increase to more than 41 million people because of COVID-19 including 14 million urban dwellers.

COVID-19, a global pandemic declared by the World Health Organization (WHO), is crippling the global economy and upending people’s lives thereby threatening sustainable development across all its dimensions. Africa is also facing the dire consequences of the crisis, necessitating timely response, recovery and rebuilding policies and strategies. Globally, urban areas are the epicenters of the epidemic accounting for most of the confirmed COVID-19 cases.
