The Her City Guide - Mainstreaming inclusion in sustainable urban development through gender-transformative innovation
Her City supports urban development starting with the girl’s perspective. Involving girls in urban development will make the city better for everyone because girls plan and design with diversity and different needs in mind. Participatory processes are key for planning a city that works for everyone, and if we let citizens that are rarely heard be the experts, our cities and communities will become more inclusive, equal and sustainable. By letting Her guide you throughout the urban development process, you will improve participatory urban planning, design and implementation, key to build a city that works for everyone.
The purpose of Her City is to make methods and tools available to urban actors and cities globally. We support cities to scale up and mainstream participation as a part of their long-term strategies to build sustainable cities and societies. We guide urban actors to implement projects through a step-by-step methodology providing an open and digitally accessible platform for all. We facilitate an ongoing dialogue between professionals and citizens.
The forth edition of the Her City guide brings together a comprehensive framework for inclusive and participatory urban development. Building on the success of the original toolbox, we have integrated other existing methodologies that enhance participatory urban development in a wider range of contexts. The updated guide includes a wider range of guidance and tools for monitoring and evaluation; planning across urban scales; construction, management and maintenance; policy-making, mainstreaming strategies, and scaling; and inclusive urban development for humanitarian and emergency situations.
The tools in the digital Her City toolbox platform supports 1500 users leading 430 independent initiatives, from 540 cities in 125 countries. UN-Habitat and partners have co-managed 20 UN partnership projects, resulting in 30 gender-transformative sites indirectly benefitting 1,000,000 people. Over 150 participatory workshops have engaged 3,000; 30 trainings have built capacity of 1,500 professionals; and 100 events have informed 8,000 participants, with a media reach of 8,000,000.
Her City is a joint urban development initiative by UN-Habitat and the Shared City Foundation. It has been funded by Sida, Global Utmaning and the Swedish Innovation Agency (Vinnova) with contributions from our partners Block by Block Foundation, White Architects, Swedish Union of Tenants and MethodKit.
