This report is based on a study designed to establish prevailing socio-economic conditions, the nature of businesses and the local economic development in Turkana West, and the trends of urbanization in North Rift Kenya. This report (Volume 1) is focused on Households’ Socio-Economic Conditions. It is part of 3 reports from the study, the others being Volume 2: Businesses and Local Economic Development (LED), and Volume 3: Urbanization Trends in North Rift region of Kenya.

This report provides an overview of the cooperation between the European Union and UN-Habitat over from 2014-2020 which corresponds to the EU’s last Multiannual Financial Framework. It provides key data on funding received by UN-Habitat for programmes around the world and gives impact stories from a selection of programmes. It also outlines next steps for cooperation.

For the blue economy to flourish in coastal cities, service provision challenges must be addressed alongside or as part of specific blue economy investments, as part of holistic programming, integrated with wider resilient urban planning and climate adaptation. It is intended that this report and the accompanying documents within this project portfolio provide a solid foundation for future urban blue economy planning across the region.

Commissioned by WIOMSA and UN-Habitat and produced by Arup, this report offers knowledge resources for city and national government stakeholders, WIOMSA, UN Habitat, private sector and civil society. This case study provides specific blue economy recommendations for Mombasa, focusing on strategic and operational opportunities for the city and its blue economy stakeholders, informed by primary and secondary research.
