UN-Habitat roots for localising the SDGsNew York, July 15 –UN-Habitat is at the forefront of efforts to localise the Sustainable Development Goals. Consequently, the agency recently participated in the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the United Nations central platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UN-Habitat Deputy Executive Director attends Istanbul Smart Expo

Istanbul 14 July 2016—UN-Habitat Deputy Executive Director Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyra in June attended the opening of the Smart City Expo in Istanbul, organised by Istanbul Municipality and Fira Barcelona. The event was opened by Former Spanish Prime Minister Rodriguez Zapatero and Mayor Topbas of Istanbul. According to the Deputy Executive Director, Istanbul held a special place for urbanization because it was there that Habitat II was adopted 20 years ago.

Geneva hosts City Prosperity Initiative meeting on municipal finance and urban economy

Geneva 13 July 2016-- A two-day conference “The City Prosperity Initiative for Metropolitan Cities: municipal finance and urban economy” was recently held at the UN Headquarters, Palais des Nations in Geneva. The event, which saw presentations by various international experts, was jointly organized by International City Leaders (ICL) and UN-Habitat, with the support of City Bank of Iran.

Johannesburg embraces sustainable planning

Johannesburg, 12 July 2016-- Last week, the City of Johannesburg presented Johannesburg’s Spatial Development Framework 2040 (SDF) at the 2016 South African Planning Institute (SAPI) Conference entitled ‘Planning African Cities’. The Spatial Development Framework elucidates Johannesburg’s spatial vision to become a world-class African city. It was developed through a series of participatory multi-stakeholder workshops (charrettes) facilitated by UN-Habitat’s Urban Planning LAB and Johannesburg’s planning department.
