This document attempts to capture the early history and institutional memory on gender equality and women's empowerment work in UN-Habitat.

It describes its evolution and early processes and significant milestones that shaped it. It also endeavors to capture some of the most influential external trends and events as well as the significant partners involved.

AGGI is established as an independent advisory body to the UN-Habitat Executive Director, guided by principles of integrity, transparency, trust and accountability. AGGI has the role of advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality in sustainable urban development. This is accomplished through the provision of strategic guidance and advice on policies, programs and budgeting at global, regional, national and local levels.

This Policy and Plan for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women for 2014-19 (PPG) sets out UN-Habitat’s commitment and strategy to ensure that all its activities reflect and advance the global consensus on non-discrimination and equality between men and women.

UN Habitat has been working in the eastern DRC since 2009, and the purpose of this study is to help better understand and integrate gender issues into existing programming, and to guide future activities to improve and support women’s access to land in the region.

In the context of gender and climate change, focus is often laid on women as a particularly vulnerable group that is strongly affected by the impacts of climate change.
