Based on the global and Arab housing strategies, Egypt is on the lead drawing a road map towards achieving the goals of adequate housing for all. In 2014, Egypt started preparing the Egyptian Housing Profile as a first step to monitor and analyze the sector’s components and challenges in Egypt. This was conducted with the participation of all governmental agencies, academic entities and representatives of relevant local communities.

Alluvial aquifers are widely used as a groundwater source in many countries, mainly due to their high production potential, proximity to demand areas, their ease, and economy of extraction. By pumping wells located in an alluvial plain hydraulically connected to a river it is possible to generate a hydraulic gradient so that surface water is forced to flow through the bed and the banks of the river (Figure 1).

The profile addresses topics including housing policies, housing stock and housing production in Egypt, as well as estimating housing needs until 2030, housing demand and affordability, as well as other critical topics such as housing financing, urban planning, housing provision and many other issues related to the housing sector.

The evaluated project was an innovative intervention that touched upon a topic that had not been addressed before. It made use of a participatory method that involved intensive engagement with stakeholders at different levels and managed to produce processes and patterns that can be replicated in the future.
