On 3 September a delegation of the GLTN Secretariat paid a visit to Mashimoni, one of the 13 settlements in Mathare, Nairobi. Mathare is a slum, housing over 500,000 residents, located some 3 km from Nairobi’s central business district between two main highways.
Lake Victoria towns to improve faecal sludge management
Kericho, Kenya, 3 September 2014: UN-Habitat has conducted a three-day regional workshop in Kericho focused on best practices in faecal sludge management in Africa, including case studies of Dakar, Accra and Kampala. The workshop was attended by 50 senior management and technical personnel drawn from the five East African Countries who are beneficiaries of the Lake Victoria Water supply and sanitation phase II programme; Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda and Kenya.
Indonesia prepares National Report for Habitat III
Jakarta, 2 September 2014: The Government of Indonesia helda workshop for its Habitat III National Report at the end of August. Under the theme "National and Global Recommendations Towards Sustainable Settlements", the Jakarta workshop was convened by the Directorate General of Human Settlements (Ministry of Public Works) and the Habitat Agenda Partners Indonesia. The Minister of Public Works will submit the reportto the Habitat III Preparatory Committee Meeting in New York on 17-18 September. Habitat III itself will be held in 2016.

Addressing Mexico’s Senate, Dr. Clos roots for urban legislation

UN-Habitat convenes planning workshop in Kabul in response to rapid urban growth in Afghanistan
Kabul, Afghanistan, 25 August 2014 – UN-Habitat held a two-day workshop in Kabul focused on urban planning as part of the Community-Based Municipal Support Programme (CBMSP). The workshop was attended by over 100 participants from the Ministry of Urban Development Affairs, the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG), Kabul Municipality and the four Provincial Municipalities where the programme is being implemented: Herat, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Mazar-e-Sharif.
Philippines celebrates World Humanitarian Day
Manila 26 August 2014-- Campaigns and activities to celebrate World Humanitarian Day, celebrated on August 19, took place across the Philippines with successful turnouts and wide local media coverage. In Manila, a loop video with inputs from six humanitarian agencies was displayed along with a banner and other information products at the foyer of the RCBC Plaza, where several UN agencies hold office. Two LED advertisements on the day were shown on buildings along the Ayala Avenue, a main road cutting across the city’s main business district.
UN-Habitat supports the Kenya Municipal Programme
UN-Habitat is collaborating with the Kenya Municipal Program (KMP) in capacity building for Participatory Urban Planning in the country. The collaboration is targeted at towns in Cluster III (Machakos, Thika, Embu) and Cluster IV (Naivasha, Nakuru, Nyeri ) of the Municipal Programme and aims to support the Government of Kenya to:
