The publication contains the spatial analysis of Gardho, a town in the Puntland State of Somalia.

The publication documents the process undertaken by the Sheikh Municipality, records the outcomes of the first broad consensus on urban issues, priority interventions and action plans, introduces the spatial analysis as a tool for strategic planning, and provides a comprehensive methodological tool for strategic urban planning.

This study falls within the UN-HABITAT goal to develop the capacities of municipalities in South Lebanon to undertake strategic development planning. UN-HABITAT has been operating in South Lebanon since 2007 in the aftermath of the July 2006 war on Lebanon in both recovery/reconstruction projects and capacity building for municipalities and unions of municipalities.

The objective of the Situation Analysis is to present the state of slums and slum upgrading in selected wards in Umlazi and Kenville/ Sea Cow Lake, and the effectiveness of past and ongoing upgrading initiatives, within the framework of the overall city development strategy and national poverty reduction program.
