Canaan IV, located in the central part of Canaan, is the densest and is one of the smallest neighbourhood in terms of area. In the north, the slopes are too steep, however, in the south, the presence of wide plateaus gives the potential for development. The proposals in this section are based on a participatory process with the Canaan IV community that lasted an average of three months. The UN-Habitat team maps the existing situation and then the community validates and proposes ideas.

Canaan V is one the smallest neighbourhoods in terms of area. Located in the centre, just north to Canaan III, this neighbourhood has 7,695 inhabitants. Due to lack of information, the calculation of the population was done by multiplying the number of houses by 4 persons. The topography around the periphery is steep, and we can only see some large plateaux in the centre where possible development can actually take place.

The evaluated project was an innovative intervention that touched upon a topic that had not been addressed before. This publication is the result of the project ‘Support to Regional Benadir Administration’s Central Department of Urban Planning’ implemented in technical cooperation between the UN-Habitat Somalia Programme and the Mogadishu Department of Urban Planning (DUP). The data contained in the urban analysis was collected during GPS surveys by UN-Habitat Somalia during 2010-2012 and by the Mogadishu Department of Urban Planning (DUP) during 2013.

The Urban Planning and Design Branch supports city, regional and national authorities to implement policies, plans and designs through a participatory process including all different actors, such as civil society and poor people, for more compact, better integrated and connected cities that foster equitable sustainable urban development and are resilient to climate change.

This guide takes as a starting reference the three phases of the City Development Strategy process as highlighted in the Cities Alliance conceptual framework (Cities Alliance, 2011) and, for each phase, details the relevant steps to undertake in order to ensure that climate change concerns are streamlined in the process.

The need for planning cannot be over-emphasized. Urbanization is progressing rapidly and by 2050, seven out of ten people will be living in cities. Inappropriate policies, plans and designs have led to inadequate spatial distribution of people and activities, resulting in proliferation of slums, congestion, poor access to basic services, environmental degradation, and social inequity and segregation.
