Increasingly there is growing acknowledgment from the highest echelons of the United Nations to the most respected scholars and think tanks that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cannot be achieved without the active engagement of local governments.

The Kalobeyei Photobook 2 builds upon the foundations of the first Kalobeyei Photobook published in 2016. It traces the progress of urbanization since the inception of the Kalobeyei Settlement in Turkana, Kenya, and captures discussions on thematic areas through the perspective of Turkana and Refugee youth. Like the first time, the youth utilized their skills in Photography and ICT, and contributed to the discussions which practitioners can heed moving forward.

This manual presents a harmonised methodology to facilitate international statistical comparisons and to classify the entire territory of a country along an urban-rural continuum. The degree of urbanisation classification defines cities, towns and semi-dense areas, and rural areas.

For the blue economy to flourish in coastal cities, service provision challenges must be addressed alongside or as part of specific blue economy investments, as part of holistic programming, integrated with wider resilient urban planning and climate adaptation. It is intended that this report and the accompanying documents within this project portfolio provide a solid foundation for future urban blue economy planning across the region.

WIOMSA and UN Habitat commissioned Arup to prepare a ‘Roadmap for the Development of the Blue Economy in Coastal Cities’, which provides recommendations for cities in current and future blue economy planning, activities and investment. The Roadmap provides strategic and operational blue economy recommendations across case study cities, which stakeholders are encouraged to also read and consider with respect to their city or region.

Women’s housing, land, and property (HLP) rights contribute to preventing and recovering from conflict and fragility by reducing the likelihood of violent conflicts re-igniting and assisting communities in emerging and recovering from war. They increase food security, agricultural productivity and production, and they are critical to promote the realization of other interconnected human rights.

This handbook aims to raise the number and quality of built interventions that have been co-designed with children affected by displacement in the urban context: ultimately advancing their wellbeing. It provides practical insights regarding interventions that put children’s wellbeing first, and at the intersection of participatory design, forced displacement, and the urban context.

In Kakuma-Kalobeyei, northern Kenya, streets, public spaces and shared public facilities have played a critical role in supporting host and refugee communities in their day-to-day activities. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted several gaps in public spaces in Kakuma-Kalobeyei which need to be addressed in the short-, medium- and long-term.
