Sahab City-Wide Public Space Assessment

The City-Wide Public Space Assessment (CWA) for Sahab constitutes Volume I of the “Rethinking Sahab: Urban Greening for a Resilient and Sustainable Future” project, implemented by UN-Habitat in collaboration with Sahab Municipality and with the support of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. It provides a comprehensive, data-driven analysis of public spaces across the city, forming a critical evidence base for inclusive and climate-responsive urban planning. The assessment also draws on key lessons from the City of Basel, particularly in the design, management, and multifunctionality of public spaces, adapted to Sahab’s local context.

The CWA applies a structured methodology to evaluate public spaces across three typologies; streets, open spaces, and public facilities; through a multi-dimensional framework covering Environmental Quality, Inclusivity, and Connectivity and Accessibility. Each dimension is further examined through targeted subdimensions and indicators, capturing factors such as comfort, greenery, safety, user diversity, vibrancy, amenities, and pedestrian accessibility. The results are synthesized into citywide spatial analyses that identify patterns, gaps, and priority areas for intervention.

The findings highlight both critical challenges and significant opportunities. While Sahab’s public spaces remain fragmented and unevenly distributed, reimagining them as an interconnected, people-centered network presents a strong opportunity to expand urban greening, improve mobility, enhance climate resilience, and foster more inclusive and vibrant urban environments.

The CWA directly informs Volume II of the project; the Green Public Space Plan (GPSP); an action-oriented roadmap guiding Sahab’s transition toward a greener, more resilient, and sustainable city.

Together, these efforts aim to improve the quality of life for all residents, including host communities, refugees, and migrants, while supporting broader national and global urban development agendas.
