Unregistered land rights may account for over 70 per cent of the land rights in a developing country (UNHabitat/ GLTN and IIRR, 2012). Often, there are either no or non-standard valuations in these areas. This holds back economic growth and can lead to hardship for the poor. GLTN, working with the international valuation industry, has initiated the development of guidance on this issue for policy makers, practitioners and other stakeholders. It is based on existing valuation methods.

Alluvial aquifers are widely used as a groundwater source in many countries, mainly due to their high production potential, proximity to demand areas, their ease, and economy of extraction. By pumping wells located in an alluvial plain hydraulically connected to a river it is possible to generate a hydraulic gradient so that surface water is forced to flow through the bed and the banks of the river (Figure 1).

Today, more than 50 per cent of the world’s population lives in cities. This figure will increase to a projected 66 per cent by the middle of this century and 85 per cent by 2100. Within 150 years, the urban population will have increased from less than one billion people in 1950 to nine billion by 2100

The impacts of climate change are beginning to impact people’s wellbeing and livelihoods across the world, and as they are both principle emitters of emissions and centres of innovation, cities must be at the centre of climate action. This Enhancer helps identify trends, vulnerabilities, and synergies within an urban system, providing a basis on which to initiate climate action.

This proceedings document is one mechanism which this detailed information will be shared following the conference. The second output of the conference, which is being prepared in parallel to these proceedings is the Global Research and Action Agenda on Cities and Climate Change Science, which has been submitted to the IPCC as part of the Conference Report and was noted and approved by the Panel during the IPCC’s 48th Plenary.

This publication has been conceptualized to introduce UN-Habitat’s MetroHUB initiative. The MetroHUB is a comprehensive approach for supporting metropolitan areas and systems of cities for sustainable development. It has evolved over several years, based on prior work and in dialogue with experts from different teams within UN-Habitat, but also in communication with many external partners from all over the world and with different backgrounds.

The MetroHUB Planning Studio in Arua, Uganda (20 - 22 March 2018) - a pilot capacity development activity for fostering an integrated territorial development approach - was initiated and supported by the Ugandan Support for Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Program.
