UN-Habitat conducted this comparative legal study of spatial planning laws and governance frameworks in nine countries—Bangladesh, Japan, Malaysia, Panama, Paraguay, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, Thailand, and the Philippines—as part of its technical support to the Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building project in Viet Nam. The study examined how planning mandates and hierarchies are defined and implemented across national, regional/provincial, and local levels.

The Shanghai Manual was established in 2011 following the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and serves as a tool to support the efforts of mayors and urban practitioners in advancing sustainable urban development. The ideas and principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and New Urban Agenda have been integrated into the Manual, with a focus on challenges such as how to achieve inclusive and liveable cities, innovative and creative cities and sustainable and resilient cities.

By sharing lessons from the Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (UK FCDO) funded UN-Habitat’s Global Future Cities Programme (GFCP), this report provides guidance to international organisations, donors, city authorities, UN agencies, and private sector on how to design and run multi-partner urban development initiatives that drive transformative impact and accelerate SDG implementation in rapidly urbanising cities.

The Global Compendium of Practices on Local Economic and Financial Recovery includes experiences and lessons from different cities on COVID-19 recovery. The provision of global practices gives cities across the globe an opportunity for peer-learning in developing and implementing their immediate response and recovery plans.

This report presents an innovative pilot on how to count the costs for achieving SDG 11 developed by UN-Habitat and AidData. It furthermore presents UN-Habitat estimations on the total SDG and infrastructure investment gap as well as the total financing capacity available. Finally, the report discusses possibilities for bridging the investment gap for SDG 11 and urban infrastructure.

Through a comparative analysis of the 19 cities of the Global Future Cities Programme, the report shares experiences and knowledge gained during the Programme’s Strategic Development Phase. It identifies common urban trends in urban planning, mobility, resilience and data, as well as underlying systemic barriers and enablers for sustainable urban development observed across the Global Future Cities.

Launched in 2011, UN-Habitat's Global Public Space Programme works to improve the quality of public spaces worldwide. The programme brings together knowledge, good approaches, tools and methodologies on public space and makes them availably to local authorities and other partners.
