Participatory Public Space Design with host and refugee youth to promote peaceful coexistence in Turkana County

On 13th – 16th November, UN-Habitat kick-started the Public Space Programme in Kalobeyei though a first participatory design workshop with youth from refugees and host communities. In addition to the host community, seven different nationalities were involved in the workshop. The Public Space Programme will establish a network of public spaces designed, implemented and maintained by host and refugee communities, fostering integration the two communities to ensure sense of community ownership and use of the public space.

Connecting with innovative solution-finders from the smart urbanization sector

20th September, Barcelona - Under the theme, Empower Cities, Empower people, the 2017 edition of Smart City Expo World Congress (#SCEWC17) took place this month in Barcelona. UN-Habitat signed an agreement with the event organizers through which the programme will become a strategic partner in this and future editions of the global event.

UN-Habitat and UNECE co-organize regional workshop

Geneva 14 September 2017--UN-Habitat and UNECE co-organized  a final regional workshop of the UNDA 9th tranche project “Strengthening national capacities for sustainable housing and urban development in countries with economies in transition”. The workshop was held in Geneva on 10 November to discuss experiences, best practices of and lessons learned in the implementation of the project.

Mayoral commitments on climate action represent nearly 10% of world's population

Bonn, 12 November 2017 – City commitments to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions announced at the UN climate change summit in Bonn, represent nearly seven million people, or roughly one in every 10 people on the planet.

The commitments, made under the Global Covenant of Mayors and presented in a new impact document at COP23, demonstrate the unquestionable position of cities around the world to make real and significant impacts to climate action.

Asunción and Maputo building urban resilience with the support of UN-Habitat

Madrid 9 November 2017---In the framework of the joint initiative between the European Commission, UNISDR and UN-Habitat, ‘Making Cities More Sustainable and Resilient’, UN-Habitat has initiated a series of training sessions for technicians from the cities of Asunción (Paraguay) and Maputo (Mozambique).
