Urban profiling is a methodology implemented in various conflict-affected countries in the region. Through urban profiles, UN-Habitat seeks to provide up to date, holistic documentation and analysis of the impact of the crisis in key cities, synthesising information and insight from existing sources and priority sectors, supplemented by direct field research by UN-Habitat teams based in each city.

Between 2017 to 2019, UN-Habitat and Shigeru Ban developed shelter typologies in Kalobeyei New Settlement, Kenya. The first part of the book is a journal by Philippe Monteil, Shigeru Ban’s partner - it describes successes and failures with building pilot houses, and the influence of the context in the process. The second part is a detailed Manual which explains in a sequence of steps, how to build the final housing prototype.

Somalia’s cities are growing at a fast rate. By 2026, more somalies will live in urban centres when in villages. People need basic services: they need water, health centres, job, kids need go to the school...Therefore the need to collect and process relevant and reliable data on all aspects on urban life becomes more important for decision makers, governement, private sector, civil society and humanitarian and development partners.

The Beletweyne Urban Profile provides for an overview of the main features of the city. It shortly analyses the current development challenges with a special focus upon displacement and urban resilience with regard to the Shebelle river floods. It is a complementary technical document to a several other planning studies and reports to shape the future of Beletweyne in a more sustainable way, providing basic urban services to all communities and to leave no one behind.

The Jowhar Urban Profile provides for an overview about the main features of the city. It shortly analyses the current development challenges with a special focus upon displacement and urban resilience with regard to the Shebelle river floods. It is a complementary technical document to a several other planning studies and reports to shape the future of Jowhar in a more sustainable way, providing basic urban services to all communities and to leave no one behind.

The Jubaland State Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing (MPWRH) has prepared this Urban Profile to summarise analyses and data collected across different systems, sectors and key actors from the spatial perspective in an attempt to contribute in an effective way to develop a shared understanding of the complexity of urban crisis in the context of Kismayo.

In support of the Municipality of Bourj Hammoud, UN-Habitat together with the Polish Center for International Aid, Naba’a and Beirut Arab University, undertook a rapid damage assessment at the building level (exterior visual survey).

This report collects and analyses the contribution of the experts who participated in the May 2019 Expert Group Meeting on “Affordable Housing and Social Protection Systems for All to Address Homelessness”. It investigates the complex causes of homelessness, the challenges homeless people face and the effects of homelessness on individuals and societies, and contains policy recommendations on effective housing and social protection policies.
