Urban profiling is a methodology implemented in various conflict-affected countries in the region. Through urban profiles, UN-Habitat seeks to provide up to date, holistic documentation and analysis of the impact of the crisis in key cities, synthesising information and insight from existing sources and priority sectors, supplemented by direct field research by UN-Habitat teams based in each city.

Between 2017 to 2019, UN-Habitat and Shigeru Ban developed shelter typologies in Kalobeyei New Settlement, Kenya. The first part of the book is a journal by Philippe Monteil, Shigeru Ban’s partner - it describes successes and failures with building pilot houses, and the influence of the context in the process. The second part is a detailed Manual which explains in a sequence of steps, how to build the final housing prototype.

The Port of Beirut explosions (4 August 2020) resulted in extensive damage on multiple levels – the loss of life, injury and the destruction of vast tracts of urban fabric within the municipal boundaries of Bourj Hammoud. In support of the Municipality of Bourj Hammoud, UN-Habitat together with the Polish Center for International Aid, Naba’a and Beirut Arab University, undertook a rapid damage assessment at the building level (exterior visual survey).
