UN-Habitat donates soap to schools to celebrate Global Handwashing Day

UN-Habitat has joined schools in the Lake Victoria region for soap donations and demonstrations to celebrate Global Handwashing day.

Children at the schools had the opportunity through their health clubs to learn the importance of hand washing with soap as one of the most cost-effective ways of preventing diarrhoeal and acute respiratory diseases which account for the majority of all child deaths.

Urban Youth Fund 2014 winners announced

Nairobi 13 October 2014—On the occasion marking this year’s World Habitat Day, UN-Habitat has announced the 2014 winners of the Urban Youth Fund.

A total of 22 youth-led organizations from 18 countries have been selected for the Urban Youth Fund program in 2014. The projects will receive financial support as well as training and capacity building and follow-up throughout the duration of the project.

Hyderabad hosts Metropolis meeting

MetropolisHyderabad 14 September 2014 -The XI World Congress of Metropolis, the leading world association of major metropolises took place in the city of Hyderabad, India, last month . The theme of the Congress, Cities for All, represented the functioning of democracy for all its stakeholders and explored four broad sub themes - Urban Equity, Governance, Finance and Urban India.

Social Tenure Domain Model enhanced in Zambia

Nairobi, 10 October 2014 - A second Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) training and planning workshop with the Mungule community in Zambia was held from earlier this month to pursue the data collection process in the Model’s pilot work. Pilot activities were launched in an initial workshop that was conducted in July 2014.

The three-day event took place in Mungule village, where the pilot activities are ongoing. A group of 20 community members, the majority of them women, participated.

The Urban Governance Survey by UN Habitat, UCLG and LSE Cities

LSE Cities, working in partnership with UN Habitat and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), is inviting local government administrations to contribute to a study on ‘Governing Urban Futures’ by taking part in a short [20 min] online survey that will cover the following thematic areas: Political power, budget & financing, multi-level governance, participation & accountability, continuity & strategic planning.
