Geneva 21 August 2014—UN-Habitat and the World Health Organization (WHO) last week initiated the second phase of a joint report aimed at unmasking and overcoming health inequities in urban settings.

This was a follow-up to a report Hidden Cities by the two agencies done in 2010 and which marked the first time that evidence on the magnitude of health inequities in urban settings was presented to a global audience.

Nairobi, 14 July 2014: UN-Habitat, the Kenya Property Developers Association, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, the Architectural Association of Kenya, the Kenya Green Building Society and Italy’s “Politecnico di Milano” have delivered training in sustainable design principals and energy efficiency to building practitioners in Nairobi. 

Kabul, 23 July 2014 – UN-Habitat has launched an innovative online monitoring tool employing Google Maps to document the progress of community and municipal-led development projects in Afghanistan. The initiative has been undertaken as part of programming funded by the Government of Japan in the country. 

Nairobi, 22 July 2014—The Federal Republic of Nigeria on Tuesday signed an agreement with United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) which seeks, among other objectives, to promote urban youth empowerment.

The agreement was penned at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi by the Federal Minister of Youth Development Mr. Boni Haruna and UN-Habitat’s Deputy Executive Director Dr. Aisa Kirabo.

Nairobi, 15 July 2014: With support from UN-Habitat, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has launched a Masters in Sustainable Urban Development, as well as Doctoral programmes by research and thesis in areas of urban studies.

The course will be offered under the Centre for Urban Studies, established in 2013 by the School of Architecture and Building Sciences in partnership with UN-Habitat, to guide in research, training and development of innovative ideas that will help tackle the inherent complex and diverse issues in urban settings.

Barcelona, 12 July 2014: The first meeting of UN-Habitat’s City Resilience Profiling Programme (CRPP) took place earlier this month with four member cities meeting in Spain.

The Programme brought together representatives from Beirut, Concepción-Talcahuano, Wellington, and the host city, Barcelona, to hold the inaugural workshop and assess how they are progressing in the development and completion of the City Resilience Profiling Tool.
