Providing Somali youth hope through job creation

Mogadishu, Somalia, 16 August 2018 (Mogadishu, Somalia) – UN-Habitat has launched a new training programme for youth in Somalia named ‘Project Rajo’, after the Somali word for ‘hope’, Project Rajo will provide training for 400 young women and men aged between 15-35 years in construction, business, entrepreneurship and soft skills. It will be rolled out first in Garowe and Kismayo, followed by Mogadishu.

They’re small, self-sustaining – and they could revolutionize the way we think about housing around the world, as building materials become scarcer.

Measuring just about 22-square-meters, or some 200-square-feet, a demonstration unit for the eco-friendly and affordable housing, debuted on the UN Plaza in New York this week.

Global partnership for exchange of expertise in sustainable urbanization

Moscow, 17 July 2018 - UN-Habitat and the Moscow Urban Forum (MUF) have established a global partnership to promote exchange of professional expertise in the search for effective solutions to acute urban development issues. “UN-Habitat is focusing on identification of key challenges in urban development and potential responses by cities using innovative solutions. Minecraft to engage the community in transforming an open space at Al-Ghweirieh neighborhood in Zarqa, Jordan.

Under the Global public space programme and with the coordination of the Regional Public Space Programme for Arab states, UN-Habitat Regional office for Arab States, in cooperation with UN-Habitat Jordan and the Municipality of Zarqa organized the first Minecraft workshop in Zarqa, Jordan for the participatory design of an open space in Al-Ghweirieh neighborhood.

The MineCraft workshop was held as part of the participatory approach of the project to explore the needs of the community and their vision of the designated space.
