Baghdad 26 April 2016-- UN-Habitat recently held a workshop aimed at introducing and promoting the new legislative texts to address the illegal urban sprawl, preventing future urban irregularities and introduce the investment of remote sensing technology and utilizing satellite imagery in this regard. The workshop was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning, within the National Programme of Rehabilitation & Regularization of Informal Settlements /IDP Area in Iraq.

01 April 2016, Kerbala - The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) organized a ceremony to mark the delivery of a new IDP shelter site in Kerbala and to launch two projects funded by the Government of Japan to support the humanitarian response and recovery activities in Iraq; the “Gender-sensitive Durable Shelter Support” and “Promoting Urban Recovery in Newly Liberated Areas in Iraq.”
10 March, Erbil - UN-Habitat recently organised a high-level capacity building workshop with over 60 participates from Iraqi governorates and the Ministry of Planning representatives under the Local Area Development Programme (LADP) jointly implemented by UNDP and UN-Habitat, funded by the European Union. The workshop was held in Erbil, Iraq to discuss the National Strategic Urban Development Framework within the context of the New Urban Agenda.
Nairobi, 2 March 2016- The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has received USD 15 million from the Government of Japan to implement two projects in Iraq: “Gender-sensitive Durable Shelter Support for Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq” and “Promoting Urban Recovery in Newly Liberated Areas in Iraq.”

The escalation of violence which led to the take over of Mosul by ISIL fighters in early June 2014 caused the movement of over 3 million Iraqi to neighbouring governorates and central and south Iraq. Over 275,000 people from Sinjar are estimated to be currently living in IDP camps,unfinished buildings and rented accommodation in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. One particular community was particularly affected by ISIL’s occupation: the Yazidi religious minority notoriously suffered – and is still suffering –innumerable atrocities deliberately targeting their community.
