Urbanization is placing an enormous burden on many secondary towns in Lao PDR, which will become ever more onerous as we move to the MDG target year of 2015.

With rapid urban development, the gap between demand and supply in the water and sanitation sector is widening, imposing stress on the basic infrastructure facilities by the urban local bodies, which often fails to address the growing demand. In the process, the urban poor suffer the most and are forced to live under unhygienic conditions in slums and shanty areas, lacking in basic amenities.

UN-HABITAT in partnership with the Government of India organized the Asia-Pacific Ministers Conference on Housing and Human Settlements from 13th to 16th December, 2006 in New Delhi, India, in which Ministers of housing and urban development from the Asia-Pacific region, High officials, Experts, Executive Heads of the relevant United Nations Organizations, Specialized Agencies, International and Regional Financing Institutions, Eminent Personalities and the Civil society from 38 countries…

Nearly third of the urban India lives below poverty line, about 15 percent of the urbanites do not have access to safe drinking water and about 50 percent are not covered by sanitary facilities one.
