UN-Habitat launches global tool to measure sustainable urban development
What does city prosperity look like?
To respond for the need for a new way of measuring urban development, UN-Habitat has developed the City Prosperity Initiative. The initiative is both a metric and a policy dialogue, which offers cities from developed and developing countries the possibility to create indicators and baseline information, often for the first time.
Linked to Sustainable Development Goal 11 – to make cities, inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable – it also serves to define targets and goals that can support the formulation of evidence-based policies, including the definition of city-visions and long term plans that are both ambitious, and measurable.
As well as a web portal, Eduardo Moreno will present the new tool that enables cities to quickly assess their baseline and explain how to apply this to policy and action for improvement and development.

The analysis will provide global comparative evidence regarding housing affordability, housing conditions and housing regulations in the last 25 years (1990-2015). The research is based in the Global Sample of Cities made of 200 cities that statistically represent the universe of cities which is part of the UN-Habitat partnership with the New York University and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.
The aim is to establish a scientific understanding of housing affordability and identify trends in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda following the Habitat III global cities summit in Quito, Ecuador this October.
