This report presents UN-Habitat's main achievements in 2012. They range across the whole continuum of operation and normative projects, from post-conflict and post-disaster recovery to urban planning and climate change adaptation.

UN-Habitat's country activities are focused on supporting governments in the formulation of policies and strategies with a view to creating and strengthening self-reliant urban planning and management capacity at both national and local levels and promoting sustainable urbanization. This report covers UN-Habitat's global programmes and activities in the regions: Africa; the Arab States; Asia and the Pacific; Latin America and the Caribbean; and Europe.

This report carries short summaries of each of UN-HABITAT's country activities. These reference sheets include: the total project or programme cost, partner institutions, background objectives, activities and results.

The report is divided into six sections with the first section devoted to global and inter-regional programmes, followed by five sections describing UN-HABITAT’s activities in each region: Africa, the Arab States, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. In the past this document was focused on operational activities. In line with the Medium Term Strategic and Institutional Plan (MTSIP) it now covers all country activities of UN-HABITAT.

This catalogue presents of products and services provided by UN-HABITAT under its medium term strategic and institutional plan. It highlights the agency’s comparative advantage advocating for sustainable urban development in these times of rapid and chaotic urbanization.

The focus of UN-HABITAT over the next five years promoting participatory planning and governance, pro-poor land and housing, environmentally sound infrastructure and services, and strengthening finances for human settlements.

The landmark decisions taken at the biennial gathering of governments in the UN-HABITAT Governing Council which oversees our work and budget were of great significance because 2007 marked a key turning point in human history. It was the year in which the world became fifty-percent urban.

For the first time, the majority of human beings were living in cities. And the process is accelerating.This transformation has a direct bearing on the strategies we must adopt to attain the Millennium Development Goals.
