Naivasha, Kenya, 17 June 2015—Kenya’s Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development is conducting a series of consultation workshops with all the 47 county governments to validate the draft National Urban Development Policy (NUDP). Kigali, 5 March 2015 – A delegation from the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) to UN-Habitat joined by the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director of UN-Habitat recently visited Rwanda to learn about the work UN-Habitat has been doing since 1994.
UN-Habitat commenced its activities in Rwanda after the 1994 tragic events, during which urban infrastructure was destroyed and loss of lives of qualified personnel heavily affected institutional capacity.

Why NUP is important for developing countries is to transform urbanization as a source of wealth: reaping social and economic benefits and managing and reducing negative externalizations. The current growth of urbanization tends to be unproductive in terms of livelihoods, and is characterized by slum growth and lack of basic urban services.
A National Urban Policy (NUP) is a coherent set of decisions derived through a deliberate government-led process of coordinating and rallying various actors for a common vision and goal that will promote more trans-formative, productive, inclusive and resilient urban development for the long term (which can be from 20 to 30 or even 100 years horizon).
