UN-Habitat leads Africities session on effective local government planning for sustainable development

Marrakesh, Morocco, 22 November 2018  - The second day of the Africities 8 Summit featured a wide range of lively discussions on local government perspectives on gender, youth, transport, local strategies for financing, the environment, gender equality, transport, waste management, safe cities and many other topics.

Making Cities Resilient Campaign signatories pledge to accelerate efforts during Committee meeting at start of Barcelona Resilience Week.

Barcelona, Spain, 12 November 2018 – Members of the Making Cities Resilient Campaign agreed to step up their efforts during the Committee Meeting hosted by the chair, UN-Habitat, at the start of Barcelona Resilience Week 2018. More than 4,000 cities have signed up to the Campaign, launched in 2010, which encourages cities to pledge to build resilience under the theme “My City is getting ready!”.

Resilient Homes Challenge

Nairobi, November 9, 2018 - UN-Habitat has recently joined the World Bank, Build Academy, Airbnb, and the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR)) for a global crowd-solving challenge for designs of Resilient Homes. The goal of this challenge is to generate designs for resilient, low-cost and sustainable small houses that can be built for less than $10,000 for people living in vulnerable areas, affected by natural disasters. The deadline for design submissions is November 30, 2018.
