Niger State and UN-Habitat Sign agreement to Implement the New Urban Agenda
Nairobi, 7 December 2017 – An eight man delegation from Niger State, Nigeria led by the Secretary to the State Government Hon. Ibrahim Isa Ladan visited UN-Habitat from 27th – 29th November, 2017 to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the New Urban Agenda. The MoU ceremony was witnessed by the Nigerian Ambassador to Kenya, H.E Sheidu Omeiza Momoh.
The parties discussed and agreed to foster the cooperation through the following projects.
Asia and Pacific Regional Partners Forum shows progress towards implementing New Urban Agenda
UN-Habitat and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) jointly convened the second regional partners forum in Bangkok, Thailand on 28-29 November 2017. On the agenda for this meeting was the deliberation on strategies and priorities to ensure the implementation of the New Urban Agenda in the Asia Pacific region. This was done as a follow up to the adoption to the New Urban Agenda at the Habitat III conference in Quito in the month of October 2016.
Distinguishing slum from non-slum areas to identify occupants’ issues
30 November 2017, Bellagio Italy - Despite an estimated one billion people around the world living in slums, many global data collection exercises including censuses do not track spatial distinctions of populations living in places identified as slums. Today, slums are often invisible in official statistics, generally hidden within urban averages.
Participatory Public Space Design with host and refugee youth to promote peaceful coexistence in Turkana County
On 13th – 16th November, UN-Habitat kick-started the Public Space Programme in Kalobeyei though a first participatory design workshop with youth from refugees and host communities. In addition to the host community, seven different nationalities were involved in the workshop. The Public Space Programme will establish a network of public spaces designed, implemented and maintained by host and refugee communities, fostering integration the two communities to ensure sense of community ownership and use of the public space.
Togo and UN-Habitat Sign a Memorandum of Understanding to Foster Sustainable and Green Urbanization
