The spatial profiles produced during the first phase of the project has focused on establishing the existing conditions of the refugee hosting areas, identifying challenges and opportunities for inclusive development, and outline recommendations for improvement of the settlements.

This paper sets out how working towards sustainable urbanization is crucial for the sustaining peace agenda. It builds on the ongoing reforms of the peace, security and development pillars of the United Nations and it illustrates how UN-Habitat’s expertise and experiences add value to the humanitarian development- peace actions of the UN in the region.

On 28th and 29th September 2020, UN-Habitat and Turkana County Government hosted a two-day virtual workshop to receive feedback and facilitate discussions with County officials on the potential land-use proposals based on existing situational analysis as well as proposals provided by stakeholders from previous multi-sector meetings. This plan would also support the County Government for the conferment process of the proposed Kakuma-Kalobeyei Municipality.

The UN-Habitat’s report - Cities and Pandemics: Towards a more just, green and healthy future – evidences how cities can reduce the impact of future pandemics and become more prosperous, fair and environmentally friendly. The Report calls for the response and recovery to pandemics to be based on human rights principles. It outlines how cities should lead the move towards a New Social Contract between governments, the public, civil society and the private sector.

After the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR), CMI, OECD, UN-Habitat, UNICEF, UNCTAD, UNESCO, and WHO worked together to support local authorities in advancing the implementation of the two global compacts. The recommendations in the report respond to the needs of local authorities and, while being context-related, inspire adaptation to specific priorities, geographical position and local context.

As the oldest remaining refugee settlement in the Somali Regional State, Kebribeyah has unique opportunities. The profile assesses Kebribeyah’s development potential in order to frame a starting point to develop strategic planning scenarios.
