In 2020-2021, UN-Habitat was funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to develop the Qoloji Spatial Profile for the largest internally displaced people settlement in Ethiopia. This study focuses on establishing the existing conditions, identifying challenges and opportunities, developing the scenarios, and outlining recommendations for a durable settlement in Qoloji.

Final report of the Euskal Hiria Kongresua 2020 global Expert Group Meeting “Cities for All: Ageing and Inclusion” held 23 and 24 November 2020, organized by UN-Habitat with the support of the Regional Government of Basque Country (Spain).

On 28th and 29th September 2020, UN-Habitat and Turkana County Government hosted a two-day virtual workshop to receive feedback and facilitate discussions with County officials on the potential land-use proposals based on existing situational analysis as well as proposals provided by stakeholders from previous multi-sector meetings. This plan would also support the County Government for the conferment process of the proposed Kakuma-Kalobeyei Municipality.

The UN-Habitat’s report - Cities and Pandemics: Towards a more just, green and healthy future – evidences how cities can reduce the impact of future pandemics and become more prosperous, fair and environmentally friendly. The Report calls for the response and recovery to pandemics to be based on human rights principles. It outlines how cities should lead the move towards a New Social Contract between governments, the public, civil society and the private sector.

After the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) and the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR), CMI, OECD, UN-Habitat, UNICEF, UNCTAD, UNESCO, and WHO worked together to support local authorities in advancing the implementation of the two global compacts. The recommendations in the report respond to the needs of local authorities and, while being context-related, inspire adaptation to specific priorities, geographical position and local context.

The urbanization of the Arab States Region has led to migration, displacement, and climatic conditions due to population growth, development, and economic imbalance. The Arab Strategy for Housing and Sustainable Urban Development 2030 identifies challenges such as high population growth, rural-urban immigration, displacement due to political instability and natural disasters, and security issues. This Analysis Report uses the Index of Multiple Deprivations as an effective diagnostic tool for measuring relative deprivation and inequalities in small areas, such as secondary cities and towns. The analysis shows that by 2050, 6 out 10 people in Africa will live in urban areas and 70 per cent of them will be children and youth.
