Japan supports UN-Habitat with USD 800,000 for emergency shelter and to rehabilitate housing for vulnerable in Yemen

Al Hudaydah, Yemen, February 2019 - Japan is contributing USD 800,000 to the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Yemen to provide shelter for those displaced by conflict and to rehabilitate damaged homes belonging to some of the most vulnerable population.

The project will benefit around 310 vulnerable families, living in conflict-affected neighbourhoods and internally displaced people in in Al Hudaydah Governorate in west Yemen.

Argentina adopts its first-ever National Urban Policy

In 2017, the newly elected Government of Argentina  requested support from UN-Habitat to develop a policy to support balanced regional development of its large territory, and foster inclusive development of its cities.  With 91 per cent of Argentina urbanized, the project was aimed at harnessing urbanization and enhancing its benefits, working in close collaboration with key national stakeholders.

UN Habitat opens a ‘One Stop Youth Centre’ in Wau, South Sudan

Wau City, South Sudan, February 2019 – Young people in Wau, in the north west of South Sudan, will have a place to relax, learn and come together following the opening of a One Stop Youth Centre with funding from Japan.

UN-Habitat Sudan receives USD 700,000 from Japan to support peaceful IDP returns to South Darfur, Sudan

Khartoum, 17 February 2019 – The Government of Japan has pledged USD 700,000 for the Emergency Support to IDP Return in Alsalam Locality, South Darfur State project for a period of one year starting from March 2019. The UN-Habitat project will benefit 17,100 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and members of host communities in Dagariss village, located 22 km Southwest of Nyala, the capital city of South Darfur.

Japan provides support to urgently improve rubbish management in Yangon City, Myanmar

Yangon City, Myanmar, 18 February 2019 - A grant aid agreement signed between Mr. Ichiro Maruyama, Japan’s Ambassador to Myanmar and Mr. Bijay Bahadur Karmacharya, Country Programme Manager in Myanmar for UN-Habitat aims to improve management of rubbish in Yangon City.

The USD 5.5 million project will support the introduction of the Fukuoka method to the Htein Bin dumpsite, where a large fire took place in April last year. The Fukuoka Method is a semi-aerobic landfil

A new city classification method shows Southern African countries more urbanized than thought

LUSAKA, January 2019 – Countries in Southern Africa define their urban or rural areas in diverse ways. Current approaches use criteria such as population size and density, administrative functions, economic purpose and political delineations. This significantly affects both the number of urban areas and the share of population living in such areas in these countries. When a common approach is used to define urban areas, the sub-region is more urbanized than previously thought.

Global Alliance for Urban Crises launches knowledge products at Humanitarian Networking and Partnerships Week 2019

Geneva, Switzerland, February 2019 - The Global Alliance for Urban Crises officially launched a series of knowledge products at Humanitarian Networking and Partnerships Week 2019 in Geneva.

The products were produced by multi-constituency Alliance Working Groups, and focus on the key objectives, including urban profiling for a shared understanding of crises in urban contexts, stronger collaboration among actors through an urban protocol, mobilizing the right expertise in urban crises through the Urban Competency Framework, and shaping common goals through urban resilience.
