Nigeria to work with UN-Habitat to promote youth empowerment

Nairobi, 22 July 2014—The Federal Republic of Nigeria on Tuesday signed an agreement with United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) which seeks, among other objectives, to promote urban youth empowerment.

The agreement was penned at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi by the Federal Minister of Youth Development Mr. Boni Haruna and UN-Habitat’s Deputy Executive Director Dr. Aisa Kirabo.

Kenyan university offers post-graduate degree in sustainable urban development

Nairobi, 15 July 2014: With support from UN-Habitat, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has launched a Masters in Sustainable Urban Development, as well as Doctoral programmes by research and thesis in areas of urban studies.

The course will be offered under the Centre for Urban Studies, established in 2013 by the School of Architecture and Building Sciences in partnership with UN-Habitat, to guide in research, training and development of innovative ideas that will help tackle the inherent complex and diverse issues in urban settings.

New agreement establishes Myanmar climate change alliance

Nay Pyi Taw, 10 July 2014 – A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today at Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw by the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (MOECAF), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) to formalize their collaboration in the field of environment and climate change in Myanmar.

Harness IT to improve urban governance - Kacyira

Barcelona, 9 July 2014: UN Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Aisa Kacyira, has said that we can improve governance in our cities and urban areas by harnessing the power of information technology.

Speaking at a conference on technology in Barcelona, Spain, Ms Kacyira said that with the world’s growing population, the number of youth in cities was also growing along with access to affordable information communication technology.

Sri Lanka formulates National Habitat III Report

Colombo, 1 July 2014: Fifty high level delegates from Government Ministries and partner agencies came together at a workshop held in Colombo Tuesday last week to formulate the National Habitat III Report. The workshop was convened by the Ministry of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities of the Government of Sri Lanka, following an invitation by UN-Habitat.

Buenos Aires to host second Future of Places conference

Nairobi, 12 June 2014: The second Future of Places conference, organised by UN-Habitat, the Project for Public Spaces and the Ax:son Johnson Foundation, will take place 1-3 September 2014 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it has been announced.

This is the second in a series of conferences organized to annually, in the run up to the third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development - Habitat III - in 2016, which explores the importance of planning, design, and management of public space in addition to access.
