Executive Summary UN-Habitat Strategic Plan 2014-2019

The UN-Habitat Strategic Plan for 2014-2019 succeeded the Medium-term Strategic and Institutional Plan for 2008-2013 (MTSIP 2008-2013) and was approved by the UN-Habitat Governing Council at its 24th session in April 2013. The Strategic Plan is one of the three dimensions of the UN-Habitat reform whose implementation started in January 2011, the other two being the Organizational Review and the Governance Reform.The preparation of the Strategic Plan 2014-2019 was highly participatory.

Although the UN General Assembly had already urged its members before on several occasions to address urbanization issues, it is only in the 1970s that tangible yet timid actions were taken to deal with the rapid and often uncontrolled growth of cities. On 1 January 1975, the UN General Assembly established the United Nations Habitat and Human Settlements Foundation (UNHHSF), the first official UN body dedicated to urbanization.
