This planning manual, which is targeted at planners and technicians in Somaliland (north-west Somalia) explains basic urban planning and details six crucial steps in the urban planning cycle.

The Urban Planning Manual for Somaliland defines what plans are and details the basic procedural steps for making a plan. The annexes provide basic data collection formats and mapping tips for undertaking a study. They also elaborate on the participatory process and the techniques to be used.

Las proyecciones de crecimiento de la población urbana en todo el mundo nos dicen que entre 2000 y 2050, será necesario duplicar la cantidad de espacio urbano en los países desarrollados y deberá ser expandido en 326 por ciento en los países en desarrollo para dar cabida a la gente.6 Esto es equivalente a la construcción de una ciudad del tamaño de Londres cada mes durante los próximos 40 años. Los gobiernos locales tendrán que administrar este crecimiento y la repercusión del mismo sobre las fi nanzas municipales.

También tendrán que hacer frente a la desigualdad social resultante y deberán hacer planes para reducir la degradación del medio ambiente y hacer frente a los efectos del cambio climático.El hecho de que este crecimiento de la población ocurra en gran medida en las ciudades intermedias, con poca capacidad de recursos humanos y presupuestos limitados, agravará el problema.

The Strategic Urban Development Plan of Homa Bay is an initiative of the UN-HABITAT taking place in collaboration with Homa Bay Municipal Council.

The objective of the initiative is to assist the Municipality of Homa Bay to prepare a strategic spatial framework that will help guide the future development of Homa Bay.

UN-HABITAT has played a central and very active role in the recent debate on the future of urban planning. For years planning was considered an inefficient tool, unable to address development effectively.

However, renewed attention to urban planning has recently emerged. Shifting dramatically from its initial ambition to command and control the city, planning has started reassessing itself in the new context of urbanization.

The goal of this action plan is to upgrade 50 per cent of the existing unplanned and unserviced areas in Dar es Salaam by 2020 while simultaneously preventing the formation of new unplanned settlements. The plan is divided into thematic action plans, with cost estimates, for land, basic services, housing and capacity building.

The action plan is the result of a consultative process involving all city stakeholders and partners, driven since 2005 by the Government of Tanzania and the Dar es Salaam Local Authorities, with technical assistance from UN-HABITAT and funding from Cities Alliance.

This publication is a call to action for cities to address Climate Change. It presents information and practical case studies of what cities can do to respond to one of today's leading challenges in 12 key messages.

It takes the view that climate change presents cities with an opportunity to review urban policy and local strategies which would lead to more sustainable, livable and vibrant cities.

There are a number of key areas of local government competencies that city officials may want to target when implementing carbon trading projects; including town and urban planning, infrastructure development, service provision, waste management, energy provisioning and transportation.

It is the objective of this tool to provide environmental, planning and development officials at the local government level with clear guidance on how to develop Clean Development Mechanism and Verified Emission Reduction projects.

The General Organization for Physical Planning (GOPP) is the competent administrative authority mandated to prepare the strategic urban plans for all cities in Egypt. Since 2006, GOPP has adopted a strategic participatory and decentralized approach in order to capture the real needs and address challenges that face the current urban communities.

In cooperation with UN-HABITAT, strategic urban plans for 50 small cities (with population less than 60,000) are being prepared using the UN-HABITAT's Rapid Urban Sector Profiling for Sustainability methodology as an efficient method that prioritizes decentralized visions. The City Development Perspective documents, in brief, the process of developing the strategic urban plans for one of the cities targeted through the project. It provides readers with a glance on how cities currently look like, how they are envisioned in the near future and the actions needed to achieve these visions.

This Development Perspective includes a general background on the urban sector situation in Wadi Al-Natron City based on the field surveys and interviews conducted in the City from July 2007 until February 2008. It also includes substantive data and information on shelter, slums, local economy, urban poverty, social services, vulnerability, environmental conditions and basic urban services in the City.

Rapid urbanization (together with climate change) is emerging as the most challenging issue of the twenty-first century. As the region with the highest percentage increase in urban population over the last two decades, Asia faces fundamental economic, social and environmental challenges to its continued development.

However, well planned and effectively governed and managed cities can provide the solution to many of these challenges. With the right economic policies and more equitable growth, poverty and slum reduction are achievable goals. Putting cities on the right path now can result in thriving, dense, green, resilient and sustainable cities.
