The city of Kigali in Rwanda two months ago hosted a regional workshop on energy efficiency in building codes. The three days meeting passed a declaration on mainstreaming energy efficiency in codes, policies and building regulations.
UN-Habitat joins forces with International Tunnelling Association
UN-Habitat and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their collaboration in urban drainage management. The MOU was signed by the Executive Director of the association, Mr. Olivier Vion, and Mr. Andre Dzikus, the Coordinator of Urban Basic Services at UN-Habitat.
Gender mainstreaming a priority for UN-Habitat
UN-Habitat and several key stakeholders recently held a five day meeting on gender mainstreaming and capacity building workshop in Kisumu, Kenya.
The meeting brought together UN-Women, Association of Local Government Authorities of Kenya, Joint Programme on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment (JPgewe) together with five countries representatives participating in the Lake Victoria Water Supply and Sanitation Programme which are Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya.
Dr. Clos gives keynote address at international transport meeting
UN-Habitat Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos, on Sunday delivered the main keynote speech on the occasion of the 60th World Congress and Mobility & City Transport Exhibition in Geneva.
The speech followed the opening address from Mrs Doris Leuthard, Swiss Minister for Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications and the welcome speech by Mr Alain Flausch, Secretary General of International Association of Public Transport (UITP)
UN-Habitat Launches the bicycle sharing concept in Africa
UN-Habitat- Executive Director Dr. Joan Clos and the President of the Republic of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday jointly launched one of the first Bicycle sharing concepts in Africa at the United Nations Headquarters in Gigiri. This took place after the official UN-Habitat Governing Council Opening session.
UN-Habitat Governing Council kicks off
The 24th Session of UN-Habitat’s Governing kicked off in Nairobi with calls to better the lives of the world’s poor. The week-long meeting was officially opened by Kenya’s newly elected President Uhuru Kenyatta. The Governing Council meets every two years to examine UN-Habitat's work and relationships with its partners.
UN-Habitat and Korean Institute in a partnership
UN-Habitat and The Korea Transport Institute (KOTI) on Tuesday signed a Partnership Agreement which aims at supporting cities in developing sustainable urban transport systems with a focus on public transport.
The UN-Habitat Deputy Executive Director Dr. Aisa Kacyira Kirabo in her speech during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) said that "cities in many developing countries are getting choked. Traffic congestion in urban areas is leading to increased fuel consumption and loss of productive time."
UN-Habitat launches a Multifunctional Clean Energy Centre
UN-Habitat launched the construction of a Multifunctional Clean Energy Centre at St. Christine Community School Centre in Kibera Kenya. The project which is funded by DANIDA and UN-Habitat, is a joint initiative by the local community, Under the Same Sky project, and Umande Trust in partnership with VE International (Denmark). It is the first of a series of Multifunctional Clean Energy Centres that UN-Habitat plans to construct in other Sub-Saharan African cities.
