Executive Director's Message on the occasion of World Environment Day, 5 June 2018

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is my privilege to be here today and to make these remarks in behalf of Madame Maimunah Mohd. Sharif, USG of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-Habitat.

At UN-Habitat we often talk about an important milestone that was reached a few years ago: More than half the world’s population lives in cities. Foremost among the environmental implications of this unprecedented urbanization is the phenomenon of solid waste generation, an inevitable result of human activities.

Drawing the Future School of Deba

Kabul, 31 May 2018. Deba is an 11-year-old school girl from Kabul. Last week she participated in a community workshop in Kabul where residents were asked to identify priority development projects for their locality. For Deba it was very clear: she drew the school that she wants for her and her friends. “This is the school that I want for my future”, Deba said.

UN Under-Secretary-General Arcot Ramachandran, First Executive Director of UN-Habitat April 6, 1923 – May 17, 2018

UN Under-Secretary-General (USG) Arcot Ramachandran, who died on 17 May 2018, at the age of 95, was the first Executive Director of the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements, UNCHS (Habitat), now the United Nations Programme for Human Settlements (UN-Habitat). A national of India, he was appointed Executive Director, at the level of Under-Secretary-General, when UNCHS (Habitat) was established in 1978 and served until 1992.

Executive Director's Message on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity

This year and on this very day, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Eight percent of the 8,300 known animal breeds are already extinct, and 22 percent are vulnerable to extinction. Only one percent of the more than 80,000 tree species in the world have been studied for beneficial uses. Entire ecosystems are sustained by micro-organisms and invertebrates, but their importance is still relatively unknown and rarely acknowledged.

Award Ceremony Concludes 11th Cycle of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices

Dubai, May 2018 – The 11th cycle of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices in improving the living environment was hosted by Dubai Municipality and UN-Habitat at the Dubai World Trade Centre. 10 winning practices were chosen from 524 submissions received from 89 countries. A Technical Advisory Committee comprising 10 technical experts familiar with the New Urban Agenda conducted the first evaluation and selected 110 good practices, with an international jury selecting the final 10 winners.

Japan’s representative opens Kalobeyei refugee centre

Kalobeyei, Kenya, May 2018—A representative of the government of Japan Yo Ito, alongside County and National Government officials officially opened the community center aimed at integrating refugees community with host community at the Kalobeyei refugee centre.

There were about 60 participants in total from both communities, including the members who participated in the planning process.
