In March 2020, UN-Habitat began supporting efforts in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic in Kakuma-Kalobeyei, Turkana County, Kenya. This was facilitated through UN-Habitat's role as technical lead for the Spatial Planning & Infrastructure Development Working Group under the Kalobeyei Integrated Socio-Economic Development Programme (KISEDP).

By 2050, an additional 2.5 billion people will be living in the world’s towns and cities, with almost 50 per cent of that growth taking place in the Commonwealth. Member States, both large and small, are facing the impacts of climate change and rapid urbanization. The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded these, and progress towards achievement of the SDGs has been eroded in many countries, undermining the first year of the Decade of Action towards Agenda 2030.

The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020 brings together the latest data to show us that, before the COVID-19 pandemic, progress remained uneven and we were not on track to meet the Goals by 2030. The project is implemented in close collaboration with the Benadir Regional Administration/ Mogadishu Municipality and in partnership with World Health Organization, Danish Refugee Council and Save the Children. The purpose of this Goal 11 Status Report is to report on progress towards Palestine’s achievement of Goal 11, “Sustainable Cities and Communities”. The Goal 11 Status Report covers the period from 2015 until June 2021, changing variably depending on the available data for each target and/or indicator. As a Programme, we promote the crucial role of green and quality public spaces in cities, acting as an enabler for social justice, prosperity, and environmental change. The Global Public Space Programme adopts an integrated and iterative approach for sustainable public space development and management.

This report captures the Regional Office for Africa advisory services, solutions, and interventions to national and local governments across Sub-Saharan Africa in 2020. It also highlights the impact and the lessons learnt in the process.

The UN-Habitat’s report - Cities and Pandemics: Towards a more just, green and healthy future – evidences how cities can reduce the impact of future pandemics and become more prosperous, fair and environmentally friendly. The Report calls for the response and recovery to pandemics to be based on human rights principles. It outlines how cities should lead the move towards a New Social Contract between governments, the public, civil society and the private sector.
