In March 2020, UN-Habitat began supporting efforts in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic in Kakuma-Kalobeyei, Turkana County, Kenya. This was facilitated through UN-Habitat's role as technical lead for the Spatial Planning & Infrastructure Development Working Group under the Kalobeyei Integrated Socio-Economic Development Programme (KISEDP).
The report showcases key spatial strategies carried out at different scales in the earlier months of the pandemic. They include (1) Accessibility studies for the repurposing of existing facilities, and a (2) Spatial outbreak investigation. The report describes these processes and their implementation, and shares insights and lessons learned on the role of good urban management systems during a pandemic which can be used to advise stakeholders and partners working in the field.
