In response to growing urban migration challenges, the Migration Informed Urban Planning: A 3-Step Guidebook offers practical strategies for integrating migrants displaced persons and host communities promoting equitable urban development. Drawing on experiences from Cameroon, Egypt, and Jordan, it equips urban planners, policymakers, and local governments with tools to create inclusive, resilient cities through sustainable urban planning.

In response to the growing challenges of migration and displacement in urban areas, this publication presents principles for improving urban planning and public space development. Intended to illustrate best practices and guide practitioners, policymakers, and local authorities, these principles are supported by recommendations and examples from across UN-Habitat’s recent operational experience.

The Kakuma Regeneration Strategy promotes economic growth, sustainability, self-reliance, and integration of hosts and refugees in the new Kakuma Municipality in Kenya. It offers a path to overcoming economic, environmental, and socio-cultural challenges through physical revitalisation, improved governance, and a transition away from traditional models of hosting refugees in camps.

This report provides an overview of the cooperation between the European Union and UN-Habitat over from 2014-2020 which corresponds to the EU’s last Multiannual Financial Framework. It provides key data on funding received by UN-Habitat for programmes around the world and gives impact stories from a selection of programmes. It also outlines next steps for cooperation.

The ‘Kakuma-Kalobeyei Future Vision’ proposes a collective vision of what the host and refugee communities of Kakuma-Kalobeyei could become in 10-15 years’ time. Developed in line with a whole-of-society approach, informed by government and transnational policies, community perspectives and sound urban planning principles, this vision lays the foundation for the social, economic and spatial regeneration of these communities in Turkana County, Kenya.

By providing technical support and capacity building, the UN-Habitat-Cities Alliance project “Sustainable Economic Development along the Turkana West Development Corridor Through Enhanced Connectivity”, capitalises on emerging infrastructure connectivity opportunities and ongoing comprehensive development programmes.

Since 2020, UN-Habitat has been funded by the EUTF Programme entitled ‘Enhancing self-reliance for refugees and host communities in Kenya’. The spatial profiles produced during the first phase of the project have focused on establishing the existing conditions of the refugee hosting areas, identifying challenges and opportunities for inclusive development, and outline recommendations for improvement of the settlements.
