Migration-Informed Urban Planning - A 3 Step Guidebook from the Urban Planning and Infrastructure in Migration Contexts (UPIMC) Programme in Cameroon, Egypt, and Jordan

In response to the increasing challenges posed by migration and displacement in urban areas, the Migration Informed Urban Planning: A 3-Step Guidebook provides a comprehensive methodology for integrating migrants and displaced persons into urban planning processes. This guidebook, developed under the Urban Planning and Infrastructure in Migration Contexts (UPIMC) programme, is designed to support urban planners, governments, international organizations and other stakeholders in creating inclusive and resilient cities.

The publication is built on experiences and lessons learned from pilot projects in Cameroon, Egypt, and Jordan, offering practical tools and best practices for addressing urban migration challenges. It outlines a three-phased methodology: “Understand the City,” “Planning the City,” and “Transforming the City”, to develop sustainable urban planning frameworks that effectively incorporate the needs of migrants and displaced populations and their host communities in the most vulnerable neighbourhoods.

The guidebook not only provides actionable strategies but also highlights successful interventions, offering recommendations for replicating these approaches in similar contexts. It aims to enhance the capacity of local governments and communities to proactively address urban migration issues, fostering social cohesion and sustainable development in rapidly growing urban areas.

This publication is an essential resource for urban planners, development practitioners, and policymakers working in cities facing significant migration pressures. It is also of interest to donors, the private sector, and actors involved in financing sustainable and inclusive development in cities, offering valuable insights and tools to support inclusive and resilient urban growth.
