Social Safeguards Basic & Advanced (Training Module) 2016 This training module will introduce concepts in relation to environmental and social safeguards which will protect both the environment and the people from adverse effects of development projects, particularly from citywide infrastructure projects. Moreover, it will introduce the social safeguard planning, tools and practical guides in a broader perspective to create a foundation to localize and adopt social safeguard tools and mechanisms in the process of planning, designing and implementing citywide infrastructure projects. Finally, this training module will be able to guide the participants to explore and understand in‐depth the roles, functions and tasks of safeguards in the operational practices. A practical work of identifying and analysing development induced social issues will be undertaken during the training through group work/exercise.

Leveraging Land: Land-based Finance for Local Governments – A Reader 2016 One important pattern among highly urbanized countries is that they tend to rely more heavily on land-based taxes. A review of 64 countries shows a strong positive correlation between the urban population percentage and land-based taxes as a percentage of GDP.
The table presented in the adjacent box illustrates this point. While the average land-based tax revenue for these countries is about 0.75 per cent of GDP, the average among highly urbanized, high-income countries is over 1.5 per cent of GDP. The table suggests that as urbanization intensifies in a country, and especially if income levels increase, land becomes increasingly important in financing sustainable urban development.

Annual progress report 2016 2016 This is the third Annual Progress Report on the implementation of the six-year strategic plan (2014-2019) prepared in accordancewith the Governing Council resolution 25/3 of April 2015. The strategic plan is being implemented through three successive biennial work programmes and budgets (GC resolution 24/15). The report reviews progress made on implementation of the 2016-2017 work programme and budget in 2016 and focuses on the results that are attributed to interventions of UN-Habitat’s and those of its partners. Each section starts with highlights of main results noted in 2016, followed by reports on results realized at country, regional and global levels. Results are measured against the defined expected accomplishments (EAs), and progress rated on reported attainment of indicator targets for 2017, together with qualitative analysis of noted changes.
