Executive Director's Message on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity
This year and on this very day, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Eight percent of the 8,300 known animal breeds are already extinct, and 22 percent are vulnerable to extinction. Only one percent of the more than 80,000 tree species in the world have been studied for beneficial uses. Entire ecosystems are sustained by micro-organisms and invertebrates, but their importance is still relatively unknown and rarely acknowledged.
Award Ceremony Concludes 11th Cycle of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices
Dubai, May 2018 – The 11th cycle of the Dubai International Award for Best Practices in improving the living environment was hosted by Dubai Municipality and UN-Habitat at the Dubai World Trade Centre. 10 winning practices were chosen from 524 submissions received from 89 countries. A Technical Advisory Committee comprising 10 technical experts familiar with the New Urban Agenda conducted the first evaluation and selected 110 good practices, with an international jury selecting the final 10 winners.
Donor impressed with project, talks of lessons learnt
Accra 16 March 2018—The Canadian government who was the main donor of WASH DPC Project has expressed its satisfaction for the way the initiative was executed.
In a post project interview in Accra, the First Secretary (Development) at the Canadian High Commission Francis Bedros was however convinced that the project would have done with more visibility, an aspect he says was not explored to its fullest.
UNICEF sees UN’s global reach and talent pool as crucial for project execution
Accra, 16 May 2018-- “The comparative advantage that the UN has in executing a project of this magnitude is that it can tap into a pool of one of the most talented people from around the world. At Unicef we had a big team dedicated to this project both at the country headquarters and on site.”
This is how the chief of WASH at Unicef Ghana David Duncan views the advantage of having UN agencies carry out the Joint UN programme on WASH in Disaster Prone Communities (DPC) project in selected areas of Ghana.
WHO assures on water quality, future collaborations
Accra 16 May 2018—World Health Organisation (WHO) is satisfied with the unity of purpose exhibited by the various UN agencies involved in the WASH DPC project.
Ghana Country Director Owen Laws Kaluwa says: the success rate of the project was reasonably high considering that this was the first time we were working together as different UN agencies but delivering in unison.”
Man of God says WASH project was a gift from God

Japan’s representative opens Kalobeyei refugee centre
Kalobeyei, Kenya, May 2018—A representative of the government of Japan Yo Ito, alongside County and National Government officials officially opened the community center aimed at integrating refugees community with host community at the Kalobeyei refugee centre.
There were about 60 participants in total from both communities, including the members who participated in the planning process.
