Roundtable on floating cities at UNHQ calls for innovation to benefit all

NEW YORK 3 April 2019 – UN-Habitat convened a roundtable discussion of architects, designers, academics and entrepreneurs at UN Headquarters on how floating cities could be a viable solution to urban challenges such as climate change and lack of affordable housing.

The meeting was co-convened with Oceanix, a company looking to build the floating structures, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Center for Ocean Engineering and the USA-based Explorers Club.

Zamalek, Egypt, 29 March 2019—UN-Habitat and Egypt held a two-day conference on March 24 and 25 bringing together over 120 experts.

“In order to be smart, cities need to be sustainable and inclusive”. This is one of the key messages emerging during the conference organized by UN-Habitat E and co-organized with and the Egyptian Ministry of Housing, Utilities & Urban Communities throughout the Housing and Building Research Council (HBRC) - Urban Training and Studies Institute - and under the auspices of the Prime Minister.

UN-Habitat hands over three new urban settlements to vulnerable Iraqi returnees in post-conflict areas

Anbar, Iraq 26 March 2019 - UN-Habitat handed over a total of 286 durable core houses in Ramadi, Fallujah and Karma in the Anbar Governorate constructed under the Gender-Sensitive Durable Shelter Support for Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq project funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by UN-Habitat. The houses have been constructed for vulnerable returnees whose houses were destroyed during the war.
