Mosul, 8 December 2016 – The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Iraq has published a comprehensive urban analysis on Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city and the focus of an international military campaign to liberate it from occupation by the terrorist group that calls itself “Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).”
Following the adoption of the New Urban Agenda, UN-Habitat's Global Public Space Programme is launching a call for innovative and exciting public space projects which could receive a small grant to support implementation. Local authorities and non-profit organisations are invited to submit proposals which aim to achieve the following expected result:

Gaza, 13 December 2016 - With financial support of the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium, UN-Habitat and UN Women have launched a new innovative Programme to advance women’s and youth’s rights to participate in reconstruction and recovery efforts in Gaza.
The Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation, Isabella Lövin, visited the Mogadishu One Stop Youth Centre on 1 December 2016 along with a high-level delegation from the Government of Sweden. Mogadishu government and UN-Habitat representatives accompanied the Swedish visitors.
Kigali, 6 December 2016 – Over 40 government delegates representing directorates of physical planning, and land administration and management from 17 Eastern and Southern African countries agreed to explore ways of integrating and enhancing collaboration, coordination and dialogue when implementing land and urban policies.

Tehran, 7 December 2016 - UN-Habitat and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Tehran and Iran’s Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, held a joint workshop on “Housing Finance & Construction Technology: Challenges and the Way Forward” at IRIB International Conference Center.
We are failing more than one billion people across the world. Every day that goes by with thousands and thousands of families without an acceptable place to call home is a day when we have collectively failed to deliver on people’s universal Right to Adequate Housing.
Stairwells, street crossings, uneven sidewalks, narrow doorways, small bathrooms, signing a lease… For many of us, none of these are major challenges. But for those whose movements depend on a wheelchair and those who live with a visual impairment or a mental disability, these minor inconveniences can quickly become insurmountable barriers and impede their access to all kinds of basic services, jobs, education and culture. Effectively, for them, these our slight urban nuisances can all effectively become the vectors of their social exclusion.
