This publication presents the situation of the eleven municipalities of the Eastern Consortium Fluminense (Conleste) in relation with the MDGs.

These municipalities are in the area where the Petrochemical of Rio de Janeiro will be constructed. UN-HABITAT works with the eleven local governments monitoring the situation of the municipalities in relation with the MDGs.

This document is an internal Kenya country impact study of initiatives supported THE UN-HABITAT Water and Sanitation Trust Fund (WSTF). The objective of the WSTF, established in 2003, was to bring in new investment and ideas, expand service coverage for poor urban dwellers and help build momentum for achieving the MDGs.The impact study reviewed the overall strategy of the WSTF, examined the Kenya country context and the UN-HABITAT country strategy, and undertook an impact study of specific projects. Information was gathered from project documents, interviews with key stakeholders including project beneficiaries, and field visits.

On 20th December 2006, the UN General assembly declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation (IYS). The proposal was brought into the General Assembly by 48 Countries at the recommendation of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.

The International Year of Sanitation provides the global community with an opportunity to raise awareness and accelerate actions for the achievement of the sanitation MDG through a variety of actions and interventions.

El 20 de diciembre de 2006, la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas declaró que 2008 sería el Año Internacional del Saneamiento. Por recomendación de la Junta Asesora sobre Agua y Saneamiento del Secretario General de la Naciones Unidas, 48 países presentaron la propuesta a la Asamblea General.

El Año Internacional del Saneamiento no sólo contribuye a sensibilizar a la comunidad mundial, sino también a acelerar el progreso hacia el logro del Objetivo de Desarrollo del Milenio en materia de saneamiento, mediante diversas acciones e intervenciones.

Le 20 décembre 2006, l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a proclamé l’année 2008 Année internationale de l’assainissement (AIA). Le projet lui en avait été présenté par 48 pays, sur la recommandation du Conseil consultatif sur l’eau et l’assainissement auprès du Secrétaire général de l’ONU.

L’Année internationale de l’assainissement donne à la communauté internationale l’occasion de faire oeuvre de sensibilisation et d’accélérer la réalisation des mesures prises pour atteindre l’OMD relatif à l’assainissement par le biais de diverses interventions.

Financing Urban Shelter presents the first global assessment of housing finance systems, placing shelter and urban development challenges within the overall context of macroeconomic policies. The report describes and analyses housing finance conditions and trends in all regions of the world, including formal housing finance mechanisms, microfinance and community funding, highlighting their relevance to the upgrading of slums. Recent policy developments in the area of shelter finance are discussed at the international and national levels. The report also examines policy directions that could be taken to strengthen shelter finance systems, particularly with respect to realizing the Millennium Declaration target of improving the lives of slum dwellers.

The Guide represents a milestone in the efforts of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme to monitor the Millennium Development Goals adopted by the UN members states in the year 2000. UN-HABITAT has been assigned the responsibility to assist governments in monitoring and eventually attaining the global “Cities without Slums” Target of improving the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers. This guide offers not only the definition related to urban poverty and slums but also a hierarchy of indicators at the operational level and specific ways to measure them.

The Challenge of Slums presents the first global assessment of slums, emphasizing their problems and prospects. It presents estimates of the numbers of urban slum dwellers and examines the factors that underlie the formation of slums, as well as their social, spatial and economic characteristics and dynamics. It also evaluates the principal policy responses to the slum challenge of the last few decades. The report argues that the number of slum dwellers is growing and will continue to increase unless there is serious and concerted action by all relevant stakeholders. The report points the way forward and identifies the most promising approaches to achieving the Millennium Declaration target on improving the lives of slum dwellers.
