This project aims to enhance the health, safety, and security conditions of host/refugee populations settled in Greater Beirut through the provision of renewable energy solutions to public facilities providing critical services in the community as well as street lighting. Within the Greater Beirut area, two Lebanese Civil Defense Centers and one Fire Brigade in Bourj Hammoud, Jdeide and Bachoura are targeted to receive solar photovoltaic systems and corresponding equipment to ensure that they have access to electricity 24 hours a day. As well as, rehabilitating and providing energy to streetlights neighbouring the three facilities to improve safety and security of their surroundings.

Noting Lebanon’s current energy crisis, this project is crucial to facilitate access to electricity for public facilities and streetlights in their surroundings to ensure continuity of their operations. This in turn will ensure access of the vulnerable communities to social and health services and enhanced safety and security conditions.

  • The solar panels installed on the roof of the Civil Defense Centre in Bourj Hammoud and surrounding streetlights supply up to 19,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy which is equivalent to approx. 15 tons of C0 2 emissions and reducing 5.7 tons of diesel fuel consumed for power generation annually.
  • The solar panels installed on the roof of the Fire Brigade  Centre in Bachoura and surrounding streetlights supply up to 38,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy which is equivalent to approx. 30 tons of C0 2 emissions and reducing 11.5 tons of diesel fuel consumed for power generation annually.
  • The solar panels installed on the roof of the Civil Defense Centre in Jdeide and surrounding streetlights supply up to 34,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy which is equivalent to approx. 27 tons of C0 2 emissions and reducing 10 tons of diesel fuel consumed for power generation annually.
George Krikorian, Municipal Council Member of the Municipality of Bourj Hammoud at the Lebanese Civil Defense facility in Bourj Hammoud. 24 January 2023
"Lebanons energy crisis is affecting us all. With only an hour or two of national electricity
and backup generators on for specific hours during the day our capability to respond to
emergencies was reduced. Nights were especially difficult, often our communication devices
wouldnt be fully charged and if we got a call at night about a fire, we tripped over each
other while getting ourselves ready in the dark. Now thanks to the new solar panels installed
on our centres we have reliable energy – a necessity for us to properly serve citizens."
Avedis Kazadgian, member of Bourj Hammoud Lebanese Civil Defence Centre.
