URBAN CULTURE - Raising Awareness, Promoting Participation, Generating Knowledge and Engaging the International Community on Sustainable Urban Development
You are cordially invited to partner with us on the URBAN CULTURE event scheduled for 6th October, 2018 along with Urban October in raising awareness, promoting participation, generating knowledge and engaging the international community on sustainable urban development. This will be a perfect fit for your brand to participate as a partner/sponsor.

Idea and Concept
Urban Culture focuses on trends, arts, entertainment & lifestyle - the urban way of life. Urban Culture is an annual fun event for art and urban mixed media scenes. It offers a place for creating art and finding innovative ways to blend cultures, movements, materials and techniques. Every edition we invite a team of artists to take over and turn it into a groundbreaking event. In the process, the artists help to creatively regenerate areas that have undergone significant economic, art and cultural change and engage in an exciting fun multi-cultural party mood. This event features Great Live Entertainment and Showcases by local Artists, State of the Art Sound System, Stage Set Up and Lighting.

Urban Culture Philosophy
Art is a cultural asset which needs to be longingly cultivated and developed. We believe that urban culture offers important and powerful forms of expression which are often overlooked as artistic movements and which deserve more positive exposure. These art forms have already established themselves in many areas of contemporary life and culture: in the fashion we wear, the music we listen to and the media we watch and read. Urban Culture seeks to take these creative movements even further into new areas of society and into new cultural territories. The places where our parents or grandparents worked, rotten structures waiting to be burned or knocked down by somebody, can be reanimated and brought back to life as canvases for this young art form. The site-specific installations created by the Urban Culture artists reflect both upon the historic and the contemporary, interacting with long forgotten industrial architecture and reactivating life in lost places. This creatively engages the local population to positively re-examine themselves, their neighborhood and their urban heritage, whilst also promoting the worldwide phenomenon that is urban culture.

One of modern India’s great shame is the administrative and social failure to eradicate ‘manual scavenging’, the most degrading practice of untouchability in the country. Merely because of their birth in particular castes, the practice condemns mostly women and girls, but also men and boys, to clean human excreta in dry latrines with their hands and carry it for disposal in dumps, lakes, or rivers. Lack of political will and inadequate implementation of “The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Rules 2013”(MS Act 2013) has maintained the status quo of the caste order and continued the plight of the Manual Scavenging communities.

Rashtriya Garima Abhiyan and Jan Sahas undertook a study to document the deaths happening in sewer and septic tanks all over India. The study aims to understand the progress on implementation of the MS Act 2013, socio-economic condition of the families after the death of the deceased and the legal course of actions in the incidents in which the first information report (FIR) was registered. The compensation received by the families on account of the death as per the landmark Judgement of the Supreme Court and the rehabilitation to the families as per the MS Act 2013 have also been an area of the study. The survey was carried out in 11 states of India in which the families of deceased from the respective states were interviewed. Total 51 incidents were covered in which 97 deaths were reported. These are not mere numbers but an example of the apathy of the society. The deaths need to be stopped as well justice should be served to those who have died while doing the undignified work. We have also documented some cases of killings of manual scavengers in a 20-minute documentary titled “The Cost of Cleanliness”.

Rashtriya Garima Abhiyan and Jan Sahas is releasing the research report “Justice Denied” and documentary titled “The Cost of Cleanliness” on 4thOctober, 2018 at Deputy Speaker Hall, The Constitution Club of India, Rafi Marg, New Delhi.

During the event, 400 members of the survivor families will also participate to share their issues.

We request your participation at the event. Your support will bolster our collective commitment to the cause.

Co-Creating Open Digital Services for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities: Local governments are more and more using open data to provide public services to their citizens. However, they lack tools on how to involve citizens, especially older citizens, in the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of these initiatives in order to make them address citizens’ needs and expectations in their daily life. The EU-funded Mobile Age project, together with older persons, local government, social care service providers, has developed and tested a co-creation methodology and tools in pilot sites across Europe (Bremen, South Lakeland, Zaragoza and Region Central Macedonia). The final conference of the project provides an opportunity to learn about the tools and discuss our lessons learned and policy briefings in order to help other cities and regions to benefit from them.

On the World Cities Day, the JRC’s Community of Practice on Cities (CoP-CITIES) discusses with selected partners its main research and policy-support activities on cities and in particular the ongoing preparation of the Report on the Future of Cities.
The CoP-CITIES allows the scientific community and policy-makers addressing specific challenges and features of cities and urban systems (including for instance social polarisation and spatial segregation, housing unaffordability, and demographic trends) promoting the adoption of a 'territorial' point of view, i.e. placing the 'territory' and not the 'theme' at the centre of the analysis.
Building upon the knowledge produced by CoP-CITIES and with the support of other Directorates General of the European Commission and external partners, the Report on the Future of Cities discusses a series of contemporary urban challenges and emerging phenomena. Building on scientific evidences, the report proposes a description and initial interpretation of emerging urban phenomena, highlighting the possibilities that innovative research methodologies and a multi-disciplinary approach can offer to the study of future cities and to the design of sustainable integrated policies supporting urban transformation.
On October 30th, the JRC presents the overall concept of the report, including insights from the first chapters drafted: the rationale of the report (why should we talk about the future of our cities?); the issue of the definition of a city (what is a city?); the use of space in a city (how can public space help to address future urban challenges?); and the provision of city services (what are the challenges in providing city dwellers with good access to commercial, education and health services, etc.). The report will be enriched on the basis of the discussion in the Community of Practice and in contacts with stakeholders in the coming months. A final report is planned for the summer of next year. The Knowledge Centre for Territorial Policies coordinates the elaboration of the Report that will continue in the next months with periodical releases of chapters.

  • Urban Dialogues (2:30 to 5:30 pm, Room IV): Featuring mayors from UNESCO’s International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities – ICCAR, urban specialists and artists, the session aims to foster reflection and creative thinking on how local authorities, together with their own citizenries, can take leadership in weaving the sociocultural fabric in urban spaces. The objective is to fill the gap that exists in the international discourse on urbanization – where issues of demographics, technologies and architecture dominate, and where the human face of these social transformations is usually a secondary consideration. The discussion will also seek to reinforce UNESCO’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, and to promote a global movement of cities that actively advocate for city-to-city solidarity and cooperation through innovative solutions. The themes of the panels are the following:

Panel 1 – Inclusive and Sustainable Cities: Understanding the Human Face of Urbanization

  • Expert from the UNESCO Megacities Water Alliance (TBC)
  • Youth city councilor (TBC)

Moderator: Ms Shams Asadi – Human Rights Officer and urban planner, City of Vienna

Panel 2 - Innovation for sustainable urban development: what works, what doesn’t?

  • The Urban Artists are Present (5:30 to 6:30 pm, Segur Hall): An artistic segment showcasing the wealth of urban creativity will be organized with street artists who have become, in their own right, influencers on social activism in the urban space. This segment is a testimony to the continuing rise of this artistic genre as a symbol of social realities in urban culture. A live drawing session in the Segur Hall will be conducted by the street artist Kouka. A musical performance will be given by the xTend hip-hop dance company, followed by an open dance session with the public. An open graffiti wall will be made available to the public who will be invited to make their own art.

Session "Circular city. City as an ecosystem for green businesses" in the framework of the Open Innovations Forum.
Since its launch in 2012, Open Innovations Forum has established itself as Russia’s leading international platform for entrepreneurs, corporations, scientists, and government officials. The ambition of the Forum is to discuss the most important emerging global tech challenges from different standpoints – technological, managerial, and humanitarian. In 2017, Open Innovations welcomed visitors from 98 countries, hosting 18,200 participants, 700 speakers, more than 800 investors and 1,200 journalists.
Description of the Session:
Citizens become more and more environmentally conscious. They demand access to clean water and fresh air, green and well-managed urban environment, and strive to reduce their plastic footprint. Therefore, the concept of a circular economy, an economic model that promotes more efficient use of natural resources, has been gaining ground in politics, industry and society. The new paradigm presupposes not only waste recycling, but the creation of the system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design. The model has been recently adopted by both cities and technical corporations. According to the report prepared by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, cyclical production can bring the global economy $ 1 trillion annually, saving $ 500 million in materials and preventing the emergence of 100 million tons of waste.
Where do the interests of city authorities and companies cross when introducing the ideas of cyclical production into their practice? How can cities transition to a circular economy? What should be the role of business in the development of new economic model? What technologies are needed to move to a new economic model? What technologies are being introduced by companies today?
Among speakers of the session are Anton Kulbachevsky, Minister for Environmental Management and Protection of the Moscow Government, representatives of technological companies and experts that offer products to decrease the amount of solid municipal waste.

Understanding that the public space is a vital ingredient of successful resilient cities, and it helps build a sense of community, civic identity and culture, UN-Habitat, together with the Barcelona City Council and some other local partners, is celebrating the World Cities Day at the street level.
In concrete, the new Sant Antoni superblock (superilla) is the proposed spot to host the celebrating activities of the World Cities Day. The superblocks are the cutting edge urban development project that creates mini neighbourhoods with no traffic, pedestrian-centred, in which spaces are repurposed to fill the city with new life. Superblocks were introduced with the aim of responding to the city’s scarcity of green spaces and its high levels of pollution.
On 27th October from 10 to 14 the city’s superblock will offer a programme of activities addressed to families to reflect on how to build more sustainable and resilient cities by playing and participating in workshops.

The Metropolitan Day global campaign 2018 is a joint initiative developed by several international partners, including CIPPEC, the Inter-American Development Bank, Metropolis, UN Habitat MetroHUB, the University of Guadalajara, the Politecnico di Milano, Metropolitan and Territorial Planning Agencies (MTPA), Fundação Getulio Vargas - CEAPG, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit and Trasnversal, with the goal of honouring the Montreal Declaration on Metropolitan Areas and also, the Urban October UN Habitat.
Besides, we get the participation of 14 metropolitan cities: Montreal (Canada), Monterrey (Mexico), Sekondi-Takoradi (Ghana), San Salvador de Jujuy (Argentina), Guadalajara (México), Rosario (Argentina), Novo-Hamburgo (Brazil), Tijuana (Mexico), San Salvador (El Salvador), Medellín (Colombia), Srinagar (India), Quito (Ecuador), Montevideo (Uruguay) and Buenos Aires (Argentina).
This initiative seeks to promote single-day meetings across cities around the world during the first week of October 2018. Leaders will have the opportunity to convene with their peers from neighboring cities to discuss the most pressing challenges facing their territory and develop methods for applying the New Urban Agenda.
Moreover, bringing together leaders of urban agglomerates to develop collaborative learning spaces that promote exchange among peers, raising international awareness on the importance of comprehensive metropolitan management that promotes coordination and cooperation among local governments, and promoting knowledge transfer among participants through spaces that facilitate innovation and exchange of best practices represents some of the main aims of this campaign.

The Global Dialogue on Affordable Housing: Policy, Finance, Technology and Sheltering

This event will take place in Paris, New York, Honolulu, Jakarta and other FIABCI cities around the world. Global cities are unable to meet a rising demand for affordable and inclusive urbanity. Complex metropolitan governance calls for more coordinated efforts from national, regional, and local governments and better dialogue and cooperation between the private and public sectors together with civil society.

The Global Dialogue on Affordable Housing will bring together all the stakeholders to explore how governments, the business sector, citizens and others have responded to the challenges of providing sustainable urban development. Concrete illustrations in policy-making, housing finance, building and construction technology, and sheltering will be shared to show there are already working solutions for a better urban future when everyone changes their mindset.

The event will promote principles of (i) inclusion, (ii) equity, and (iii) resilience through two objectives: Knowledge Building and Advocacy and Public Engagement. The event looks for positioning the young people as knowledge assets of their cities; promoting young people's voices and their innovative solutions to transform the use of public space; and provide intergenerational and multi-stakeholder space for young people.

The theme for World Habitat Day 2018 is Municipal Solid Waste Management. To broaden the discussion on best practices as well as the main challenges regarding waste management both around the world and in New York City, the United Nations will be hosting a panel of representatives from the government, nonprofit, and private sector to provide their insight. They will be focusing on food waste management.
The amount of total waste generated is expected to triple to 5.9 billion tons a year by 2025, due to increased consumption and ineffective management. We live in a world where about one in nine people do not have enough food while annually 1.3 billion tons of food is lost or wasted. Food waste presents an enormous opportunity for tackling food insecurity.
New York is no exception. There are 1.4 million[1] facing hunger in New York City alone. About 14 million tons of waste are thrown out each year, costing the city almost $400 million annually just to ship to incinerators or landfills. Organic waste is considered the last ‘recycling frontier’.
Rethinking food and food waste can help provide solutions, overcoming urban inequalities and reducing waste. Cities are spaces for innovation. Across the US and in New York, a variety of initiatives is emerging that can inspire others and that bring together the private sector, local governments and civil society. It also allows to rethink urban food systems, connecting cities with their hinterland, framed within the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda.
The conversation with Chefs and Policy Makers will allow us to explore these topics, connecting practice with policy.
The conversation is organized by UN-Habitat and the James Beard Foundation at the occasion of World Habitat Day, which has as theme “Managing Municipal Solid Waste” and Urban October. It coincides with the launch of the James Beard Foundation’s Waste Not initiative, which includes the Waste Not cookbook and the Creating a Full-Use Kitchen curriculum.

This World Habitat Day, join Habitat for Humanity's global advocacy campaign, Solid Ground in advocating for land policies that decrease fear of forced eviction, promote gender inclusivity, improve living conditions of slums and promote disaster resilience.

Twenty percent of people worldwide — 1.6 billion individuals — do not have access to decent housing, and something needs to change. Access to land lies at the heart of inadequate housing, and lacking that access prevents too many people from the most basic physical, economic and psychological security that adequate shelter provides.

In fact, 3 of every 4 people around the globe lack recognition of rights for the land on which they live. Women and vulnerable groups living in informal settlements are more susceptible to discriminatory land policies and forced eviction. Disasters pose a greater threat to people who lack formal land rights, making it harder to rebuild after a disaster.

Donate your signature to join Habitat for Humanity’s global advocacy campaign, Solid Ground, and urge policymakers at all levels to support sustainable and equitable land rights for all.

BIRDLINK Grand Opening at Williamsburg’s East River State Park

A new public sculpture project supporting urban birds with native plants

www.birdlink.info

BIRDLINK is a project that seeks to link together isolated patches of bird habitat and promote awareness of species that share our urban space through the installation of interactive native-plant sculptures. These free-standing bamboo spirals, overflowing with indigenous vegetation, will be installed at multiple locations throughout the city. BIRDLINK supports the international celebration of the Year of the Bird, the centennial anniversary of the signing of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

This summer, the artist and BIRDLINK creator Anina Gerchick and her team built the first BIRDLINK sculpture at NYC Audubon Society's Governors Island location. The plants thrived there, bearing blueberries and blooming with new flowers every week. This video shows the making of the sculpture on Governors Island. In September, this BIRDLINK sculpture moved to East River State Park where it will continue to grow and flourish through May 2019. Visitors are welcome to experience this beautiful public sculpture, attracting birds, bees, and butterflies, as it undergoes seasonal transformations and two bird migrations. In June 2019, BIRDLINK will install a sculpture at Sara D Roosevelt Park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Please join us for our Grand Opening Saturday, October 6 at East River State Park. We will enjoy talks by directors of NYC Audubon and NYS Parks and the BIRDLINK creator, Anina Gerchick.

"BIRDLINK public art installation offers a provocative new interpretation of the native-plants-for-birds theme in sync with New York City Audubon’s mission to champion nature in the city's five boroughs." — Kathryn Heintz, Executive Director, NYC Audubon

“BIRDLINK is an innovative public art installation that delights the eye and invites better appreciation of birds in urban nature. It brings new excitement to our dynamic park and fits perfectly with NYS Parks’ mission to support environmental education in our glorious parks.” — Leslie Wright, NYC Regional Director, NYS Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

"Building New Homes: Urban Action to Address Migration Trends"

Presented by Urban Planning Student Association, in partnership with Wagner Refugee Action Council
Join NYU Wagner's Urban Planning Student Association for an exploration of cities as key actors in global efforts to address new trends in migration and refugee crises throughout the world. The event will feature experts and practitioners from international institutions, NGOs, and city governments, who will present on their own experiences working with migrants and refugees in urban centers, and will develop recommendations to build on current successes and face future challenges. This event will take place in honor of Urban October, 31 days of promoting a better urban future.
Cities are increasingly being recognized as key actors in international affairs, as they are the main implementers of development goals and national policies, and the first to address shocks and crises. Whether in times of refugee crises or in responding to general migration flows, cities and their residents are charged with providing migrants with access to basic services, guaranteeing their rights and integrating them into their social, political, and economic fabric. What can we learn from what is being done in cities around the world to build new homes for migrants and refugees? What have been successful policies that have facilitated the integration and empowerment of migrants and refugees in urban centers? What are the main challenges being faced by cities in the process and how can they be best addressed?
Panelists will include representatives from UN-Habitat, the International Rescue Committee, and the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs. More information on panelists to be updated.

"Ending Homelessness: Floors and Roofs for All in the Sustainable"

This panel will discuss how adequate housing is a core component of social protection. Social protection floors are designed to protect individuals and countries from shocks and other stresses by providing an adequate, basic standard of living to vulnerable populations. In addition to ensuring a basic income and access to healthcare, housing must be considered as a key component of ensuring individuals have a basic standard of living.
The panel will call member states to take steps to remedy the exclusion of street homelessness in this global debate by situating the issue within the conversation around social protection floors and exploring the challenges street homelessness poses to meeting the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.
