Nairobi, 30 March 2022 – Executive Director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif announced today that the Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) will be hosted in the city of Cairo, the capital of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
“Egypt’s selection came after a rigorous review by the selecton committee which also considered a number of other bids. I thank the Government of Egypt and City of Cairo for their commitments to host the WUF12 in 2024,” said the Executive Director of UN-Habitat. UN-Habitat and the Arab Republic of Egypt will soon start a series of negotiations to determine the programmatic and logistical details of the upcoming forum.
Egypt welcomed the official announcement on the selection of Cairo as the WUF12 host in 2024. “We are pleased that the Twelfth Session of the World Urban Forum will come back to the African continent for the first time since the inaugural session of the World Urban Forum, which took place at UN-Habitat headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002,” Egypt’s Deputy Permanent Representative said on behalf of the Government of Egypt at the Executive Board session of UN-Habitat in Nairobi.
On October 2021, Egypt hosted the World Cities Day 2021 in the historic city of Luxor in the presence of the Executive Director of UN-Habitat and Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly, with a video message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
