It is estimated that up to 1 billion people live in slums in the cities of the world – one sixth of humanity – and that the numbers are rising.

Published in 2008, UN-Habitat developed a reader-friendly booklet with the aim of promoting community-led housing reconstruction. The booklet provides basic technical and financial instructions that would allow affected families, after Lebanon 2006 war, to plan, in an adequate manner and to finish the reconstruction of their houses.

This policy document articulates UN-HABITAT’s role with regard to human settlements in crisis. It responds to Resolution HSP/GC/20/17 and supporting documents produced in response to Resolution HSP/GC/19/9 in relation to “Post-conflict, natural and human-made disaster assessment and reconstruction”.

The purpose of this report is to provide an assessment of land disputes in Crimea.

Throughout history, conflicts have been waged over land. Confrontations over territory, border disputes, occupation of the territory of one State by another, or grievances stemming from inequitable access to land invariably have dramatic consequences for human settlements.

This Compendium has been compiled to accompany the Workshop on Strategies and best practices in crime prevention, in particular in relation to urban crime and youth at risk in the context of the 11th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Bangkok, Thailand from 18-25th April 2005.
