“Towards Collective Action for the Creation of Safer Cities Vision 2030”

General Information

Following the launch of the African Forum for Urban Safety (AFUS) on the side lines of the Africities 2015 Summit, the City of Durban – a beneficiary of UN-Habitat’s technical support was endorsed as the permanent secretariat for AFUS based on its long-term institutional practice on Safer Cities. This year AFUS will host its first international Learning Exchange at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, South Africa from 29 June to 1 July 2016. This conference is organised by EThekwini Municipality as the Chair of AFUS and UN Habitat, with the support of UCLGA and the Ministry of Human Settlements of the Republic of South Africa.

The purpose of the conference is to highlight what has been done in Africa through the Safer Cities Programme in the last 20 years, to describe the achievements and difficulties encountered and to measure the challenges ahead. Developing and providing sustainable safety to communities requires a long-term commitment and effort.

AFUS’s first Learning Exchange aims to develop a renewed vision for the coming years, built on the success so far, and to identify the conditions that are necessary to ensure continuous progress in making African cities safer as we move towards implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) and the African Union’s (AU) Agenda 2063.

Join us as we foster collective action from all spheres of government to put safety at the core of local government agenda. Spend three days with elected officials, local authorities, security professionals, researchers, and civil society actors, top leaders in the field of urban safety, security and crime prevention to promote Safer Cities in Africa. City safety practices and programs will be showcased in technical and political sessions in this high-level delegation. You will get the opportunity to network, expound your knowledge and contribute towards the future of crime prevention and insecurity in Africa. For more information, download the AFUS brochure.
